If passed, the Act would repeal the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendment Acts \u2013 essentially ending domestic surveillance programs siphoning up AMerican\u2019s phone calls and emails. In fact, the Director of National Intelligence recently admitted to Senator Ron Wyden that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/the-us-government-admits-to-using-the-patriot-act-to-collect-web-browsing-information\/\">The Patriot Act had even been used to surveill web browsing information<\/a> without a proper warrant. This needs to end, and a pair of Representatives from both sides of the aisle have presented a path forward to do so.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.\" -Ben Franklin<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepThomasMassie?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepThomasMassie<\/a> &amp; I intro'd 'Protect Our Civil Liberties Act' (HR8970) to repeal the so-called Patriot Act &amp; end illegal government surveillance <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QEB8gKxFKu\">pic.twitter.com\/QEB8gKxFKu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tulsi Gabbard \ud83c\udf3a (@TulsiGabbard) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TulsiGabbard\/status\/1339249493921984520?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>The Patriot Act can\u2019t be allowed to go on<\/h2>\n<p>Warrantless mass surveillance, or even individual surveillance, is simply unconstitutional and the fact that the country\u2019s intelligence community has had carte blanche to spy on constituents will always be remembered as a black mark on America\u2019s supposedly reputation and history as a supposed bastion of civil liberties. In the announcement video for the Protect Our Civil Liberties Act, Representative Gabbard stated that the bill:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201creexamines how best to strike this balance of protecting our national security interests while also ensuring that the constitutional rights of every single American is preserved.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For too long, the decisions regarding this type of surveillance have been stuck behind closed doors, and that can\u2019t continue. In her video announcement of the landmark bill, Representative Gabbard also called out the country\u2019s intelligence community, stating that the country\u2019s alphabet soup:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201chas not been transparent or honest with the American people or even Congress about what they\u2019ve been doing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Protect Our Civil Liberties Act is a breath of fresh air<\/h2>\n<p>Even with the Patriot Act repealed, the onslaught of anti-privacy and anti-encryption legislation keeps coming from governments around the world such as in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/eu-continues-to-push-for-lawful-access-aka-backdoors-to-end-to-end-encrypted-data\/\">European Union<\/a> \u2013 not just in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/us-attorney-general-demands-encryption-backdoors-at-all-costs-and-for-you-to-just-accept-it\/\">United States<\/a>. The bill would also make it so that the Government Accountability Office will be charged with \u201cregularly monitor domestic surveillance programs.\u201d\u00a0 Additionally, the bill would ban \u201cgovernment-mandated back doors\u201d in both software and hardware.<\/p>\n<p>On his end, Representative Massie stated to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/530498-massie-gabbard-team-up-on-bill-to-repeal-the-patriot-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> his conviction and why it\u2019s time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/private-internet-access-implores-representative-crow-protect-privacy\/\">Patriot Act<\/a> and FISA Amendments Act to finally go:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur Founding Fathers fought and died to stop the kind of warrantless spying and searches that the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act authorize.
