The Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom (UK) really really don\u2019t want Facebook to bring end to end encryption to Facebook Messenger and Instagram. In fact, a police chief went so far as to say that offering end to end encryption would \u201c\u2019unequivocally put lives at risk.\u201d The words were uttered by Detective Chief Superintendent Kevin Southworth \u2013 who head\u2019s the country\u2019s online anti-terrorism efforts.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement fears that end to end encryption will make it harder for Facebook\u2019s internal compliance teams to root out terrorist and child exploitative materials on their platforms. Some non peer reviewed estimates even suggest that the efficacy of Facebook\u2019s internal review programs will be reduced by as much as 70% if end to end encryption is implemented. Of course, the authorities would never try to enumerate how many lives would be put at risk if end to end encryption isn\u2019t allowed to be implemented.<\/p>\n

Despite what the government claims: End to end encryption isn\u2019t a bad thing<\/h2>\n

The fact of the matter is that banning end to end encrypted messaging would put more lives at risk. Banning end to end encrypted messaging isn\u2019t even a mathematical possibility. The United Kingdom has previously suggested a not-so-well-named GHOST protocol<\/a> as a way of adding authorities to end to end encrypted chat groups. While Southworth was quick to clarify that they weren\u2019t asking Facebook\u00a0 to build encryption backdoors \u2013 just taking the official stance that the public shouldn\u2019t have end to end encryption tools.<\/p>\n

Mr Southworth told the Daily Mail<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis move to end-to-end encryption should not be underestimated in that it really could be a game-changer for us. The challenge is because it is in such volume. Unlike some of the more niche platforms\u2026 if half the world is using Facebook\u2019s platforms and all of that is dark \u2013 not just to us but to Facebook themselves \u2013 then you could argue that there is almost an element of hiding a needle in a haystack full of needles.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Needless to say, the government in the UK is very interested in stymying the growth of end to end encrypted services. What Southworth\u2019s words have revealed is that authorities truly do understand that encryption is useful \u2013 especially for government operations. What Southworth has an issue with, is the masses having access to this technology. Still, Southworth tried to deflect, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not about us subverting people\u2019s privacy, this is about us being able to specifically target those who are doing serious crime in the closed space in social media.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

End to end encryption, especially for messaging, is something to be embraced and standing in the way of that is \u2013 by definition \u2013 subverting people\u2019s privacy. Facebook has responded to the anti privacy pressure with this statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cStrong encryption is essential to keep everyone safe from hackers and criminals. Governments rightly want to protect people from criminals and we believe weakening encryption would make everyone less safe, not more.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
