After all, Qatar\u2019s heavy-handed digital monitoring is <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/qatar\/freedom-world\/2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">no secret<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not my job to give travel advice, but personally, I would never bring my mobile phone on a visit to Qatar,\u201d \u00d8yvind Vasaasen, head of security at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrk.no\/sport\/everyone-going-to-the-world-cup-must-have-this-app---experts-are-now-sounding-the-alarm-1.16139267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey go far too far in terms of what data is recorded and used,\u201d says Naomi Lintvedt, research fellow at the Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo, who has also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrk.no\/sport\/everyone-going-to-the-world-cup-must-have-this-app---experts-are-now-sounding-the-alarm-1.16139267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> reviewed the apps<\/a>. \u201cThey get far too broad of access to change and take over functionality on your mobile phone, which appears to be completely unnecessary.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Downloading the two apps on your device gives Qatari officials the ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get your exact location, as well as the location of any phones near you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extract your personal data from the device, as well as information from other apps on your device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make phone calls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unlock your screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevent your device from going into sleep mode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>View your network connections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retrieve anything on your phone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change the entire contents of your phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEssentially, it is clear that the app is taking data from the end user for more reasons than are expressed by the given consent button.\u201d Tom Lysemose Hansen, CTO and co-founder of app security firm Promon told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/11\/11\/world_cup_security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Register<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hansen adds, \u201c\u2026 they\u2019ll most likely be using these apps to scrape all your contacts, check your call and SMS history, track your location through GPS and device radio interfaces (bluetooth and wifi) and probably pillage your social media contacts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"protect\"><strong>Protect Yourself from Qatari Surveillance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CNIL made some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/qatar-world-cup-2022-warning-burner-phones-french-agency\/?web_view=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">suggestions<\/a> to help fans protect themselves from the Qatar World Cup apps\u2019 snooping. These include using a blank burner phone for the duration of the visit, and deleting the apps as soon as you return home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpecial care should be taken with photos, videos, or digital works that could place you in difficulty with respect to the legislation of the country visited,\u201d the CNIL spokesperson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from online surveillance, some 15,000 cameras are monitoring the crowds using facial recognition. While the organizers say the cameras are to keep footballers and fans safe, Qatar\u2019s dismal privacy and human rights\u2019 record suggest this surveillance may have other objectives as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Football fans in Qatar face other online threats as well. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/cybernews.com\/news\/cybercriminals-football-qatar-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">report<\/a> by cybersecurity firm Digital Shadows claims cybercriminals are sure to also be aiming to cash in on the Qatar World Cup. Tactics may include using malicious domains impersonating official World Cup websites and apps to phish for data. That\u2019s why it\u2019s best to always check the url you\u2019re opening to see if it looks right.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stay\"><strong>Stay Safe at the 2022 World Cup\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remains unclear what the Qatar authorities plan to do with all the permissions their apps ask for. All requests for official comment have so far gone ignored.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bottom line?
