The data was offered up for sale on the dark web in 2020 \u2014 and it\u2019s far from the first time user data was exposed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s understandable if you aren\u2019t ready to let your Facebook account go, but you shouldn\u2019t ignore the<strong> genuine threat to your data<\/strong>. Just log into the app on your phone and check out your <em>Activity Log.<\/em> It\u2019s staggering just how much they know \u2014 and how many users have no idea how expansive the data collection really is.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/Mw8au06wedE6Pz0nFq_DqwxxYvLr_Rt0AFMZ8Tny2qEAZNRIlP_kRQ7d5Z2aQcJ-JhLnXNvwZI7mSE89w4DjBkQ4nUQKyJBA7TAmzx4ZquYbGISnAtTze60yOQGGhN7WTwTYs7ncZ-xn0iFyaGESG44\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook generates up to <a href=\"https:\/\/kinsta.com\/blog\/facebook-statistics\/#:~:text=generates%204%20petabytes%20of%20data%20per%20day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">4 petabytes of data daily<\/a> \u2014 the equivalent of 4,000 terabytes. Worse yet, <strong>you have no control over what they do with your information<\/strong>. It\u2019s not pretty and isn\u2019t limited to tracking your activity to make recommendations. They can sell your contacts lists, share personal information like phone numbers or emails with affiliates, or just store it infinitely. You can\u2019t delete most of it, have no idea when they will, and have no control over where spillover data goes. Facebook is also bad at keeping it from ending up on the dark web. According to the FTC, Facebook received <strong>fines totaling $5.25 billion for mishandling user data in the US and violating the regulations of the GDPR in the UK.<\/strong> One of the major changes was allowing you to opt out of certain forms of data collection and sharing, giving you more control over who uses your data.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take advantage of the new changes and <strong>readjust your privacy and security settings on Facebook to give yourself the maximum level of data protection<\/strong>. For instance, your profile settings. Limiting who can see the information you put on your profile is an excellent way to secure your account.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do this, open your<strong> <\/strong><strong><em>Profile<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>and click on the <strong><em>Edit profile<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>button. <strong>Click on any item to get to the <\/strong><strong><em>Customize Your Intro<\/em><\/strong><strong> window<\/strong>. You\u2019ll see the information you\u2019ve entered (e.g., <em>Work<\/em>), then click on <strong><em>Edit<\/em><\/strong> to change the audience for this information to <strong><em>Friends<\/em><\/strong><strong> or <\/strong><strong><em>Only me<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><em>Account<\/em><\/strong><strong> options are the first details you enter when setting up your Facebook account<\/strong>. Information you enter here is some of the most personal information Facebook collects, so it\u2019s crucial to safeguard this data.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the settings you\u2019ll need to change for your phone, email, and text messaging preferences are in <em>Account<\/em> under <strong><em>Personal and account information<\/em><\/strong> in the section for <strong><em>Contact information<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Once you open the <em>Contact information<\/em> window, follow the instructions below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phone<\/strong> \u2014 This one is a bit tricky. If you already added a phone number and didn\u2019t set it to <em>Limited use<\/em> and <em>Only me<\/em>, you need to remove it first. To remove your number, click <strong><em>Phone<\/em><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> then click <strong><em>Remove<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> You can now reenter your phone number with different privacy settings or leave it off your account. Facebook doesn\u2019t require you to have a number listed, so <strong>don\u2019t add your phone number if you aren\u2019t using it for 2FA <\/strong>purposes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Email<\/strong> \u2014 Click on <strong><em>Email<\/em><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> then access the preferences <strong>dropdown menu<\/strong> and choose <strong><em>Only me<\/em><\/strong><strong> or <\/strong><strong><em>Friends<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> This limits who can see your email address when they view your profile.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Text messaging settings<\/strong> \u2014 Under <strong><em>Notifications<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>click <strong><em>Edit<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> <strong>Remove checks accordingly<\/strong>.
