{"id":25003,"date":"2023-08-10T05:25:19","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T12:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/?p=25003"},"modified":"2025-03-28T22:33:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T05:33:37","slug":"worldcoin-crypto-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/worldcoin-crypto-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Worldcoin Crypto Project Aims to Let You Prove Your Identity While Remaining Anonymous"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few weeks ago, we wrote about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/the-latest-threat-to-privacy-cbdcs-central-bank-digital-currencies\/\">threat to privacy<\/a> that central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) represent.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/engineering\/opening-orb-look-inside-worldcoin-biometric-imaging-device\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Worldcoin<\/a> is a potential answer to this problem. The project aims to create a new cryptocurrency \u201cto enable universal access to the global economy,\u201d while tackling two key issues that are increasingly relevant today: proving you are human, and not a bot, and establishing your unique identity while preserving your privacy. Proving your identity may seem a rather abstract issue, but it\u2019s increasingly important in a world flooded with content produced by bots and AI systems. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/blog\/announcements\/worldcoin-project-launches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Worldcoin\u2019s approach<\/a> is based on 3 elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>World ID:<\/strong> A privacy-preserving digital identity designed to help solve important, identity-based challenges, including proving an individual\u2019s unique personhood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Worldcoin token (WLD):<\/strong> The first digital currency to be freely distributed to people for just being a unique human, where laws allow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>World App: <\/strong>The first World ID-compatible app that enables payment, purchases, and transfers globally using digital assets and fiat-backed stablecoins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World ID system uses advanced techniques to preserve privacy.\u00a0 It\u2019s designed to facilitate signing in to web sites and mobile apps by proving you\u2019re a \u201cunique and real person,\u201d but doing so without sharing personal data like names or emails.\u00a0A key part of World ID\u2019s system is the Orb, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/blog\/worldcoin\/understanding-orb-why-worldcoin-uses-biometrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a biometric imaging device<\/a>.\u00a0Worldcoin claims that it \u201cprivately and securely verifies an individual\u2019s unique personhood.\u201d Worldcoin says that ultimately it will <a href=\"https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/engineering\/opening-orb-look-inside-worldcoin-biometric-imaging-device\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">open source the Orb\u2019s design<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Orb\u2019s main job is to determine if someone is an actual living person that is not attempting to cheat the system. It does this with a variety of camera sensors and machine learning models that analyze facial features and iris characteristics. Once that determination is made, the Orb takes pictures of the person\u2019s irises, and uses machine learning models and other computer vision techniques to create an iris code, which is a numerical representation of the most important features of an individual\u2019s iris pattern.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worldcoin emphasizes that all these operations take place on the Orb; no images leave the device unless explicitly authorized by the person being scanned \u2014 see below for more on this.\u00a0The iris code is encrypted and then sent to Worldcoin where it\u2019s used to establish a user\u2019s uniqueness, but not their identity.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zero-knowledge_proof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Zero-Knowledge Proofs<\/a> (ZKPs) are at the heart of the World ID system.\u00a0The details are rather technical, but <a href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/blog\/developers\/privacy-deep-dive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the privacy benefits<\/a> are clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever a user makes use of their World ID, ZKPs are used to prove they are a unique human. This means no third-party will ever know a user\u2019s World ID or wallet public key, and in particular cannot track users across applications. It also guarantees that using World ID is not tied to any biometrical data or iris codes. When you want to prove you are a unique human, you should be able to do so without revealing any personal information about yourself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worldcoin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vault.pactsafe.io\/s\/8a18d792-fd76-44db-9b92-b0bb7981c248\/legal.html#contract-syn0uxpen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Biometric Consent Form<\/a> provides more details on how user privacy is protected. For example, Worldcoin says it will adhere to the EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/?s=gdpr\">GDPR<\/a> standards for all users, even for those in locations where weaker privacy protection laws apply.\u00a0Despite that commitment, EU data protection authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/frances-privacy-watchdog-says-worldcoin-legality-seems-questionable-2023-07-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">France<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/german-data-watchdog-probing-worldcoin-crypto-project-official-says-2023-07-31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Germany<\/a> are already investigating whether the use of sensitive biometric data is GDPR compliant. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/uk-data-watchdog-make-enquiries-worldcoin-crypto-project-2023-07-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">UK<\/a> is also conducting its own analyses of the approach.\u00a0If it is found that the Worldcoin approach is not GDPR compliant, that could be a big problem for the project. <a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/kenya-suspends-worldcoin-crypto-over-privacy-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Kenyan government<\/a> has already suspended the project over privacy concerns, pending further investigations to ascertain \u201cthe safety and protection of the data being harvested, and how the harvesters intend to use the data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the current \u201cField Test\u201d phase, users are encouraged to enable what Worldcoin calls <em>Data Custody<\/em>, which allows Worldcoin to retain the underlying biometric data generated by the Orb, and to send it to the EU and the US to train and improve its system.\u00a0In addition, that data will be labeled \u201cwith the perceived and approximated gender, age range, and skin color to train on algorithmic fairness in light of the diversity in the world.\u201d\u00a0Those raise important red flags in the context of data protection.\u00a0Worldcoin\u2019s consent form mentions other privacy dangers that users may run by participating in a global system that makes use of subcontractors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the subcontractors were to illegally process your data without authorization, then it may be difficult to assert your privacy rights against that subcontractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be possible that your data will be subject to governmental access of officials and authorities. In those cases we have committed ourselves to challenge any invalid, overbroad, or unlawful governmental request to access in court. We further use advanced encryption to hinder unauthorized access.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also some broader problems. World ID normalizes the idea of biometric scanning, which will make it easier for governments and companies to demand it in other situations. Issues of inclusion are also a concern: not everyone can use iris scanning, for a variety of physical and medical reasons.\u00a0If the World ID system becomes popular, this will need to be addressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worldcoin has some bold and interesting ideas, not least in terms of technology.\u00a0These include a cryptocurrency that is freely shared around the world, with verified users able to claim one WLD token per week (currently <a href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/worldcoin-token\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1 WLD is worth around $2<\/a>), and potentially providing the 4 billion people worldwide with a digital identity that they currently lack.
