No one should have to deal with that, so I\u2019m going to tell you all how you can stop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll provide you with a range of tips, some of which are actually cheap and easy. Use DDoS Protection Hardware<\/a><\/section>\n<a href=\"#protect\">How to Protect a Game Server from DDoS Attacks<\/a><br>\n<a href=\"#conclusion\">Conclusion<\/a><br>\n<a href=\"#faq\">FAQ<\/a><br>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what\"><strong>What Is a DDoS Attack in Gaming and How Does It Work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three main kinds of Distributed Denial of Service attacks, and they all require the use of a botnet. This is usually a massive network of devices (computers, phones, maybe even consoles) that have been infected with malware. <strong>This malware directs the multitude of devices to all attack your network at once, overwhelming it and making it basically non-functional.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the three varieties are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"volumen\"><strong>Volumetric Attacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the one you most likely need to worry about. The attack itself is simple: all of the devices on the botnet will \u201cping\u201d your network at once. A ping is a normal process designed to basically contact another device and say, \u201cHey, you there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The devices exchange information, and they\u2019re done. But a botnet will hit your network with so many pings, that it will overload your connection and your modem. This will leave your internet \u201cconnected,\u201d but you won\u2019t actually be able to do anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"protocol\"><strong>Protocol Attacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an example, the botnet will initiate a \u201cTCP handshake\u201d procedure, which is a normal thing. What\u2019s not normal is that it won\u2019t actually end the procedure; it will bombard your network with requests. Basically, it doesn\u2019t let the \u201chandshake\u201d go, and it makes everything awkward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"application\"><strong>Application Layer Attacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You probably won\u2019t have to deal with this unless you\u2019re running a publicly available web application on your router or gaming device somehow. Don\u2019t worry about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how\"><strong>How Can a DDoS Attack Affect Your Game?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what happens if you draw the ire of an enemy gamer, or someone who doesn\u2019t like your stream? In short, the attack will congest your local network, and won\u2019t let you do anything at all online, much less game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It won\u2019t just be lag, it\u2019ll be an effective cessation of all internet-based activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it can last a while, too \u2013 from a few hours to a few days. Most random gamers don\u2019t have access to a botnet of their own, and so may have to contract the services of someone who does, and that\u2019ll put a time limit on the attack. However, [insert deity here] help you if you get on the wrong side of someone who <em>does<\/em> run their own botnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ways\"><strong>9 Ways to Prevent DDoS Attacks While Gaming<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Hide_ip.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25685\" style=\"width:246px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Hide_ip.png 500w, https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Hide_ip-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 85vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are several methods to prevent and mitigate DDoS attacks on your home network. As mentioned before, some of these methods are, strictly speaking, not practical for most home users. They have been listed here because I\u2019m thorough like that. You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with the methods that are easy and cheap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dont\"><strong>1. Don\u2019t Give Out Your IP Address, Ever<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most obvious tip, but still. If anyone asks for your IP for some reason, don\u2019t give it to them. Just don\u2019t. It\u2019s never worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Also, ALT-F4 doesn\u2019t give your character a special buff during raids, \u201c\/quit\u201d won\u2019t revive your character, and your online friends can be jerks sometimes. Hilarious, but also jerks.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"contact\"><strong>2. Contact Your ISP for Help<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your internet service provider is good for two things in this instance: one, they can confirm for certain that you are, in fact, getting DDoSed. That\u2019s useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly, they can put measures in place to make sure that it doesn\u2019t happen again, at least not for a while. Well, the good ISPs can do that\u2026 some might actually not be so helpful. Your mileage may vary by a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"use\"><strong>3. Use a VPN<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not free, but it\u2019s honestly your best option most of the time, if you get the right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/\">VPN<\/a>. You see, a VPN does two things: first, it encrypts all of the traffic that goes between your computer or console, and the VPN server to which you connect. This makes it harder for third parties to see what you do online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second and most relevant thing it does is change your IP address. With your data routed through a VPN server, anyone who\u2019s trying to find your IP address from the other end will only see the VPN server\u2019s IP, not yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that if they launch a DDoS attack, they\u2019ll hit the VPN server, not your home network. Good VPN servers have DDoS mitigation built in, and will essentially stop the attack before you notice any real lag in your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color: #cfe2f3; padding: 10px; border-radius: 25px;\">\n <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/buy-vpn-online?conversionpoint=prevent-ddos-gaming\">PIA VPN<\/a> is the best choice when it comes to gaming. A lot of previously serious DDoS attack vectors have been all but eliminated by security updates to modern operating systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So whatever you\u2019re gaming on: a PC, a console, your phone, one of those interactive fridge computers for some reason\u2026 keep it up to date. Yes it\u2019s annoying. Do it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"router\"><strong>5. Keep Your Router Up To Date<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, this is basically the same as the last tip, but a lot of people forget this sort of thing. Log in to your router or modem\u2019s settings page, and make sure the firmware on it is up to date.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a very old router\/modem, you might also consider upgrading to a newer model if you can. Not every ISP allows for this, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"static\"><strong>6. Don\u2019t Use a Static IP for Your Home Network Unless You Have To<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A static IP is when you reboot your router, and you get the same IP address as before. Nowadays, you usually have to pay extra for these from your ISP. Unless you have a very good reason to use the same IP every time, don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you get a new IP address every time you restart your router, it will stop ongoing DDoS attacks, and delay the next one. It\u2019s a good stopgap measure while you implement other strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"open\"><strong>7. Don\u2019t Open Just Open Ports at Random<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPorts\u201d are basically what the name says. They\u2019re like a digital version of the Ethernet and USB ports in your computer, and all kings of different programs use them to do different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, your device\u2019s firewall should have most of them just closed and blocked off at all times by default. That\u2019s good and normal. Leave it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ddos\"><strong>8. Use DDoS Protection Software, on a Central Device<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one is complicated, and takes some knowhow, but many have used it to great effect. Basically you\u2019ll have to get a cheap computing device, like a Raspberry Pi, and install one of the following on it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nginx<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HAProxy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DDoSDeflate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are all free and open source software options that can be used to either manually or automatically block DDoS attacks. Your gaming device will need to connect to the internet through the server or PC running this software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hardware\"><strong>9. Use DDoS Protection Hardware<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is very expensive, and not practical for most. It\u2019s basically the same thing as above, but you would basically be buying hardware specifically designed for blocking DDoS attacks, usually with some proprietary software on top. And again, these are mega expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"protect\"><strong>How to Protect a Game Server from DDoS Attacks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the tips are frankly the same as above. However, the DDoS protection software does become more important at this point, because constantly changing your IP isn\u2019t very practical for game servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re managing the servers yourself, your best bet is to learn how to configure NGINX. And\u2026 if you\u2019re managing your own servers, you probably don\u2019t need me to tell you how to do it. The most you\u2019ll need is a good tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For everyone else, by far the easiest way to get a strong, protected game server is to rent your server from a third-party service. It\u2019s more expensive, yes, but it\u2019s a <em>lot<\/em> easier than attempting to manage all the security yourself. A good third-party game server host will have a network built for dealing with DDoS attacks, and people trained to handle these situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preventing and mitigating DDoS attacks is often frustrating. Heck, even checking to see that you <em>have<\/em> been attacked can take some work, but it is by no means impossible. They can\u2019t be \u201cstopped from happening at all,\u201d not in any practical sense \u2013 not unless you\u2019re willing to try and negotiate with every single person who might try to hit you with a DDoS attack. But they <em>can<\/em> be mitigated, or rendered effectively harmless to you and your network.<br><br>Most of the methods for that usually involve just not handing out your IP address, keeping all of your software and hardware up to date, keeping your ISP apprised of any attacks, and using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/\">VPN<\/a> to hide your IP address in the first place, which helps a lot.<br><br><\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1701048254625\"><h3 class=\"schema-faq-question\">Can someone DDoS you through a game?<\/h3> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Sort of. The DDoS attacks don\u2019t usually go through the game\u2019s own network, or servers. What usually happens is that the attackers will use the game to find your IP address through the game, and then attack your IP address directly.<br><br>The good news is that most games don\u2019t expose your IP address to other players these days, especially if you\u2019re playing on central game servers. However, if the game uses peer-to-peer connections, or if their general security isn\u2019t very good, you are still at risk. This is especially true for some older games. It\u2019s always a good idea to use a VPN to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/hide-my-ip-address\">hide your IP address<\/a>.<br><br><\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1701048275369\"><h3 class=\"schema-faq-question\">Does changing your IP address stop DDoS attacks?<\/h3> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Essentially yes\u2026 temporarily, at least. Changing your IP address is like moving a target around the range. Without direct \u201cline of sight\u201d to your computer, the attackers won\u2019t be able to hit you. At least, not for a while.<br><br>If your computer comes in contact with the attacker again, if they find your new IP address, the attacks will probably resume. This might happen if the attacker plays the same game as you a lot, or if you\u2019re in the same peer-to-peer voice chat app, or other situations like that.<br><br><\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1701048289708\"><h3 class=\"schema-faq-question\">How long do DDoS attacks last?<\/h3> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">That depends entirely on the attacker. Most DDoS attacks require the use of a botnet. That\u2019s basically a whole ton of computers, phones, and other devices that have most likely been infected with an app that controls them in small ways. It\u2019s something that takes planning and coordination.<br><br>It will depend on their budget. In general, they can last a few hours to a day, with one in five attacks lasting days or weeks. Don\u2019t try to wait it out, find a way to stop it.<br><br><\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1701048302694\"><h3 class=\"schema-faq-question\">Does turning off the router stop a DDoS attack?<\/h3> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Yes and no. While your router is off, the attacks will certainly stop. But when you turn it back on? Well, that depends. If your ISP is giving you a dedicated IP address (which is certainly useful for business and things like that), then the attacks will most likely resume the moment you connect again.<br><br>If you have a <em>dynamic IP<\/em>, which changes every time you reboot your modem or router, then restarting your router will stop the attack.\u00a0<br><br><\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1701048475658\"><h3 class=\"schema-faq-question\">How do I know if I\u2019m being targeted with a DDoS attack?<\/h3> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">This is a tough one, especially for non-technical users. A DDoS attack can look a lot like a normal internet failure, especially if it\u2019s normal for your internet to just suddenly get slow for a while. But, if your internet says it\u2019s connected, and you can\u2019t do <em>anything<\/em> with it for hours at a time? Then you <em>might<\/em> be getting hit with a DDoS attack.<br><br>The quickest way to check: restart your modem. If your internet suddenly works again, for everything, you might have been hit.
