HR 5606, unironically called the \u201cAnti-Terrorism Information Sharing Is Strength Act\u201d failed to attain a \u2154 supermajority and pass the floor. Edward Snowden famously told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/edward-snowden-interview\/snowden-fourth-amendment-n116881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC<\/a> in an interview that, \u201cThe Fourth Amendment as it was written \u2014 no longer exists.\u201d Where we, as a constituency, used to enjoy proper protection from illegal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/dear-chief-justice-john-roberts-search-seizure-innocence-matter\/\">search and seizure<\/a>, the Patriot Act and other knee-jerk anti-terrorism legislation have overextended the surveillance powers of the United States. The unconstitutional mass surveillance allowed by the Patriot Act were wrong in the first place. Now we have had over ten years of data to prove that mass surveillance doesn\u2019t actually prevent terrorist attacks. If anything, the metadata provoked killings that the United States has been carrying out overseas promotes more vengeance as a result.<\/p>\n<h2>Patriot Act Expansion defeated by Fourth Amendment Caucus<\/h2>\n<p>In June, the measure failed to reach its \u2154 majority by only one vote. After the citizens\u2019 lobbying campaign by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fightforthefuture.org\/\">Fight For the Future<\/a>, the new vote showed that a handful of representatives were able to tip the scale in favor of privacy. The bipartisan group of representatives that banded together to defeat the Patriot Act expansion have organized under a new name: The Fourth Amendment Caucus.\u00a0Other pro-liberty caucuses that helped organize against the Patriot Act over the several years include the Liberty Caucus.<\/p>\n<p>One of the Fourth Amendment Caucus\u2019s founders, Texas Representative Ted Poe, <a href=\"https:\/\/lofgren.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/bipartisan-house-members-announce-fourth-amendment-caucus?DocumentID=398082\">explained<\/a> the purpose of the Caucus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs technology continues to evolve and improve, Congress must ensure that the Fourth Amendment rights of citizens are protected,\u201d said Poe. \u201cTechnology may change, but the Constitution does not.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Only time will tell whether or not this Caucus is able to protect our Constitution given rights from the politicians that would misinterpret and trample on said rights.
