The law will require Chinese companies to de-anonymize their users, store that data in China, and provide the data (and even technical support) to Chinese authorities. What\u2019s more, the law also codifies the ability for China to shut down large swaths of the Internet, \u201clegally,\u201d something that the communist government has been seeking for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnd.com\/2015\/07\/china-presses-for-internet-kill-switch\/\">long time<\/a>. This is the same regime that judges its citizens based on their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/in-china-your-credit-score-is-now-affected-by-your-political-opinions-and-your-friends-political-opinions\/\">social credit score<\/a>.\u201d Across the world, Turkey has been using its own similar cybersecurity law to block <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/whatsapp-twitter-facebook-youtube-blocked-turkey-following-arrest-pro-kurdish-political-party-hdp-leaders\/\">access to social media<\/a> and to call for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/tired-of-people-circumventing-social-media-blocks-turkey-calls-for-vpn-ban\/\">ban of VPNs<\/a> and Tor.<\/p>\n<p>The laws are designed to crack down on online anonymity. China\u2019s new cybersecurity law passes the buck of many surveillance responsibilities onto Chinese companies. For instance, Chinese instant messaging apps and internet services will only be allowed to accept registrations from people that provide their real identity. Additionally, the Chinese government now mandates that the companies to do the censoring of any prohibited content, and presumably face the consequences if such censorship doesn\u2019t happen automatically or fast enough. What\u2019s more, Chinese companies will also be forced to help China in obtaining and executing the internet killswitch that China has always wanted.<\/p>\n<h2>Chinese ISPs will be forced to keep IP address logs for six months<\/h2>\n<p>For the average Chinese Internet user, the worst part is yet to come. The law also forces network operators to keep logs for six months at a minimum. China already has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/uk-national-cyber-security-centre-wants-build-great-firewall-britain\/\">Great Firewall<\/a>, which countries like the United Kingdom are trying to emulate, but mandating these internet connection records (ICRs) is the trove of metadata that the Chinese government needs to exert full control. The amount of countries with official internet connection records which detail your IP address\u2019s adventures on the open Internet is growing seemingly day by day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2016\/11\/06\/china-abusive-cybersecurity-law-set-be-passed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Rights Watch\u2019s China<\/a> Director, Sophie Richardson, also sees problems with the new cybersecurity laws. She commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe law will effectively put China\u2019s Internet companies, and hundreds of millions of Internet users, under greater state control\u2026 If online speech and privacy are a bellwether of Beijing\u2019s attitude toward peaceful criticism, everyone \u2013 including netizens in China and major international corporations \u2013 is now at risk,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Richardson concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe already heavily censored Internet in China needs more freedom, not less.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China today passed a new cybersecurity law that is designed to combat foreign hackers and strengthen China\u2019s position as an \u201cinternet power.\u201d What China\u2019s new cybersecurity bill will actually do is increase the number of Chinese VPN users.
