backdoor is a hidden or undocumented way to access a system without going through its normal authentication or access controls. A backdoor attack happens when someone creates or uses that access without authorization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinction matters. The backdoor is the access mechanism itself, while the attack is the act of establishing or exploiting it. A backdoor can exist in software, device firmware, network equipment, or even hardware, depending on where the attacker builds or introduces the hidden access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may have stumbled upon the term \u201ctrapdoor\u201d in older cybersecurity material to describe hidden system access. In cryptography, however, a trapdoor function is a mathematical function that\u2019s difficult to reverse without specific secret information. Don\u2019t confuse it with a backdoor into a computer system.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-does-a-backdoor-attack-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does a Backdoor Attack Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A backdoor attack can start in one of three ways. <strong>An attacker may discover an existing backdoor, plant one after gaining unauthorized access to the system, or embed it in software or firmware that the victim installs later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the attacker has to establish the backdoor themselves, the attack usually follows this sequence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gain an initial foothold:<\/strong> The attacker first needs a way into the target. They might exploit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/manage-security-vulnerabilities\/\">software vulnerability<\/a>, run malicious code, or tamper with trusted software before it reaches the victim. These are initial access routes rather than backdoors themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Establish or activate hidden access:<\/strong> If the attacker finds an existing backdoor, they may use it throughout an attack. Otherwise, after gaining access another way, they can create a separate mechanism that lets them return without relying on the original entry point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make the access reusable:<\/strong> Attackers often configure the backdoor so they can return later. Patching the vulnerability used to get in may therefore leave a separately installed backdoor intact. Not every backdoor provides persistence, though.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communicate with the compromised system:<\/strong> Some backdoors accept commands sent to the target. Others connect outward to attacker-controlled command-and-control (C2) infrastructure, which provides a channel for sending instructions to compromised systems. The exact communication method varies between backdoors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use the established access:<\/strong> Once the backdoor is active and reachable, the attacker has a working unauthorized route into the system.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-types-of-backdoors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Backdoors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Backdoors can be grouped by where the hidden access exists or how it works. The categories can overlap, so a single backdoor may fit more than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-malware-backdoors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Malware Backdoors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A malware backdoor is malicious software that provides hidden, unauthorized access to a compromised system.<\/strong> It may run as a separate program, a background service, a process, or another software component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its capabilities can vary widely. Some malware backdoors accept only a small set of commands, while others provide much broader control over the system. The defining feature is the hidden access, not the malware family the software belongs to or its installation method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-web-shell-and-application-backdoors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Web Shell and Application Backdoors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A web shell is malicious server-side code that lets an attacker remotely send commands to a compromised web server.<\/strong> Because the code runs through the server or web application, it doesn\u2019t have to appear as a separate program on the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers can also insert backdoors into application code by modifying existing functionality or adding hidden behavior. If the affected software is reachable from the internet, that hidden functionality can give the attacker a remote accessible entry point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-built-in-and-maintenance-backdoors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Built-In and Maintenance Backdoors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A developer, vendor, or system designer may include some backdoors rather than plant them during an attack. A hardware backdoor sits deeper still, with hidden functionality implemented at the component or device-design level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These lower-level backdoors can be harder for conventional endpoint-security software to inspect because they may run outside the layers those tools monitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-ai-backdoor-attack\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Backdoor Attack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An AI backdoor attack manipulates a machine-learning model so it behaves normally on ordinary inputs but produces an attacker-chosen result when it encounters a specific trigger.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attacker may tamper with the training data, training process, model parameters, or another part of the model-development pipeline. The finished model can still perform as expected on ordinary inputs, while the hidden trigger causes it to behave differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, an image-classification model might correctly identify normal images but deliberately misclassify any image that contains a particular small visual pattern. If testers never include that trigger in their evaluation data, the model may appear to work as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key difference is what the backdoor controls. While a traditional system backdoor creates a hidden route into a computer system, an AI model backdoor creates hidden conditional behavior inside the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-can-attackers-do-with-a-backdoor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can Attackers Do With a Backdoor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What an attacker can do through a backdoor depends on the access it provides, the privileges it runs with, and which other resources the compromised system can reach. They can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Steal sensitive data:<\/strong> An attacker may copy documents, credentials, customer records, or other information available through the compromised system, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/what-is-a-data-breach\/\">a data breach<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Change or destroy data:<\/strong> They may alter files, tamper with application data, delete information, or change system settings if their access allows it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install other malicious tools:<\/strong> An attacker may use their access to add spyware, ransomware, or other malware if the backdoor has sufficient permissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Move to other systems:<\/strong> If the affected device can reach other parts of a network, the attacker may use it as a starting point to target additional systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Abuse trusted access:<\/strong> Control of a legitimate system or account may let the attacker perform actions that appear to come from an authorized user or service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A backdoor doesn\u2019t automatically give an attacker full control of the device or wider network. Several related anomalies are more meaningful than one isolated change and may warrant deeper investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-backdoor-attack-examples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backdoor Attack Examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Backdoors have shown up in very different places over the years, from software on personal computers to trusted updates and network devices. These three cases show how attackers can hide unauthorized access at different levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-back-orifice\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back Orifice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cult of the Dead Cow released Back Orifice in 1998 as a remote-administration tool for Windows 95 and Windows 98. <strong>The software could run quietly on a computer and let someone control that machine remotely over a network.<\/strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back Orifice could give the remote operator access to files and running processes, among other functions. Its broad remote-control features made it one of the best-known early examples of backdoor software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-solarwinds-sunburst\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">SolarWinds SUNBURST<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SolarWinds incident showed how attackers can spread a backdoor through software that organizations already trust. <strong>Attackers tampered with the build process for the SolarWinds Orion Platform and inserted malicious code into legitimate software updates.<\/strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers then installed those signed Orion updates through normal channels. The malicious component, known as SUNBURST, gave the attackers a foothold inside some affected environments. Instead of targeting each organization separately, the attackers compromised the software supply chain upstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-juniper-screenos\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Juniper ScreenOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, Juniper found unauthorized code in certain versions of ScreenOS, the operating system used by its NetScreen firewall devices. One of the issues could let a knowledgeable attacker gain administrative access to an affected device.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This case shows how a backdoor can affect network infrastructure rather than a typical desktop application. <strong>The unauthorized code sat inside software that controlled the firewall itself<\/strong>, which meant an attacker could target the device handling network traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-backdoor-attack-vs-similar-cybersecurity-threats\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backdoor Attack vs. Similar Cybersecurity Threats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Backdoors can appear alongside other forms of malware or remote-access techniques, but the terms don\u2019t mean the same thing.
