In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/uk-investigatory-powers-act-forces-collection-internet-connection-records-allows-government-see-one-year-internet-history\/\">aftermath of the attack<\/a> in Westminster, Minister\u00a0Rudd claimed\u00a0that encrypted messaging apps are a \u201csecret place for terrorists to communicate\u201d after it was revealed that the attacker had used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/whatsapp-encryption-shows-value-of-metadata\/\">WhatsApp<\/a> prior to launching his attack which left four dead.<\/p>\n<h2>A ban on end-to-end encrypted messaging apps isn\u2019t out of the question<\/h2>\n<p>While speaking with the Andrew Marr Show, Minister Rudd refused to rule out the introduction of legislation that would ban end-to-end encryption using messaging apps. Rudd also admitted that she\u2019d need help to fight terrorism on social media: She said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/amber-rudd-necessary-hashtags_uk_58d7d9e8e4b03692bea6ca97\">the show<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe best people who understand the technology, who understand the necessary hashtags to stop this stuff ever being put up, not just taken down, but ever being put up in the first place are going to be them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>What<\/em> are the necessary hashtags to ban to prevent terrorism? If you think it\u2019s possible to ban encryption, which is mathematics, you might think it\u2019s possible to ban use of social media by targeting certain hashtags.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting rid of end-to-end encrypted messaging, or encrypted anything, is a bad idea<\/h2>\n<p>Brian Paddick, the Lib Dems\u2019 home affairs spokesperson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/whatsapp-amber-rudd-security-access-spy-users-messages-home-secretary-khalid-masood-a7650481.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated<\/a> in response:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese terrorists want to destroy our freedoms and undermine our democratic society. By implementing draconian laws that limit our civil liberties, we would play into their hands. Having the power to read everyone\u2019s text messages is neither a proportionate nor an effective response.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While speaking with the Andrew Marr Show, Minister Rudd refused to rule out the introduction of legislation that would ban end-to-end encryption using messaging apps. This isn\u2019t the first time that a government official has called for the end of end-to-end encryption, or even a backdoor into successful encryption implementations. Remember the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Encryption_ban_proposal_in_the_United_Kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">encryption ban proposal<\/a> by David Cameron?
