This has happened\u00a0despite a 2015 policy from the White House that promised an <a href=\"https:\/\/https.cio.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HTTPS only standard<\/a>\u00a0on all federal websites by Spring 2017. HTTPS provides encryption\u00a0and is recommended by everyone from the United Nations to (previously at least) the United States federal government. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/system-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Patent Office<\/a> announced earlier this month their intentions to downgrade the security of the Public Patent Application Information Retrieval (Public PAIR):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[\u2026] users will <strong>only<\/strong> be able to access Public PAIR through URLs beginning with <strong>HTTP<\/strong>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.uspto.gov\/pair\/PublicPair\">https:\/\/portal.uspto.gov\/pair\/PublicPair<\/a>. Past URLs using <strong>HTTPS <\/strong>to access Public Pair, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/patents\/public-pair-be-retired\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/patents\/public-pair-be-retired<\/a>, will <strong>no longer work<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All this despite the fact that the USPTO website <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=14173351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still has a valid cert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Remember when the White House decided to adopt HTTPS for all federal websites? What ever happened to that<\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/omb\/memoranda\/2015\/m-15-13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">memorandum<\/a>\u00a0titled:\u00a0<strong>A Policy to Require Secure Connections across Federal Websites and Web Services.\u00a0<\/strong>The federal government declared that \u201call publicly accessible Federal websites and web services only provide service through a secure connection.\u201d The OMB was very articulate and adamant in demanding that the federal government meet the internet community\u2019s security standards:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Private and secure connections are becoming the Internet\u2019s baseline, as expressed by the policies of the Internet\u2019s standards bodies , popular web browsers, and the Internet community of practice. The Federal government must adapt to this changing landscape, and benefits by beginning the conversion now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hopefully, the USPTO\u2019s move away from HTTP is not the beginning\u00a0of more backwards security and privacy behavior from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/trump-administration-wants-renew-fisa-section-702-keep-snowden-revealed-nsa-surveillance-programs-prism-upstream\/\">Trump Administration<\/a>,\u00a0which signed away Americans\u2019 internet privacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Patent Office\u2019s (USPTO) website is now unusable with\u00a0HTTPS as of April 21st, 2017.
