The FCC recently lost the ability to keep Internet service providers (ISPs) from selling your private data. The proposal was announced by FCC Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/fcc-commissioner-ajit-pai-reveals-proposal-reverse-title-ii-destroy-net-neutrality\/\">Ajit Pai<\/a> yesterday at a Washington DC event. The proposal would remove the Title II common carrier classification from ISPs. Separately, ISPs would be expected to include commitments to net neutrality principles into their end user agreements. If the FCC\u2019s plan to destroy net neutrality goes through, all that will be left to protect net neutrality is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/fccs-grand-net-neutrality-rollback-plan-includes-isps-promise-not-violate-basic-open-internet-principles\/\">pinky promise<\/a> from your ISP.<\/p>\n<h2>Let ordinary customers decide what the definition of \u201cInternet Freedom\u201d is<\/h2>\n<p>The FCC\u2019s plan hinges on the false assumption that neutering\u00a0net neutrality will somehow restore Internet Freedom. That the plan for an Open Internet approved in 2015, didn\u2019t enhance any consumer freedoms and instead took away Internet Freedom from the average America, which now needs to be restored.\u00a0Remember the type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/debug\/net-neutrality-violations-history\/\">net neutrality violations<\/a> that were happening up until 2014. Jon Brodkin of <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2017\/04\/net-neutrality-rules-took-away-your-internet-freedom-fcc-chair-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArsTechnica<\/a> stated concisely:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s not exactly clear which \u201cfreedoms\u201d ordinary consumers lost.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Internet consumers in the United States undoubtedly gained from net neutrality protections and if the repeal of Title II for ISPs is voted for\u00a0on May 18th, we as consumers will be left without protections and left to the mercy of our data providers \u2013 that is the opposite of what I think of when I think of Internet Freedom. Not only is the FCC trying to attack Internet Freedom, they\u2019re actively trying to usurp the very definition of the words.<\/p>\n<h2>Once more with feeling:\u00a0Destroying net neutrality is NOT\u00a0\u201cRestoring Internet Freedom\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>On their end, ISPs have started paying lip service to net neutrality, saying that they support it in theory but they do not believe that the FCC should be the ones enforcing it. Of course, because they\u2019d rather use easily broken pinky promises not to violate net neutrality principles to back up their lip service, while intentionally eroding what net neutrality \u201cmeans\u201d in mainstream media \u2013 just as the FCC is trying to change what Internet Freedom means.
