Verizon Wireless users on the\u00a0Verizon subreddit<\/a> and Howard Forums<\/a> have reported that YouTube and Netflix are being throttled to 10Mbps regardless of the speed you have paid for. If it sounds like a step towards a world without net neutrality, that\u2019s because it is. The reported speed cap, 10 Mbps, allows for 1080p streaming video, but starts to falter when streaming anything higher quality such as 1440p or 4k video. Whether or not 1080p video is enough for mobile streaming or not isn\u2019t the matter \u2013 the consensus seems to be that the throttling is very unwelcome. Using a VPN defeats this throttling and allows you to get the streaming speed that you paid for.<\/p>\n

Editor\u2019s note: Verizon has released a statement<\/a> admitting that they\u2019ve been running tests on their network but saying that they haven\u2019t intentionally throttled YouTube or Netflix.<\/p>\n

Who is doing the throttling?<\/h2>\n

According to official statements given by companies involved thus far, the YouTube and Netflix throttling described might be due to deliberate action on Verizon\u2019s part \u2013 not Netflix\u2019s. A Netflix spokesperson told The Verge<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are definitely not capping data on our end and don\u2019t cap data for any mobile networks.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Verizon hasn\u2019t commented at all. It\u2019s worth noting that Netflix has admitted to throttling mobile users for several years back in 2016. They claimed<\/a> they did so to with their customers\u2019 interests in mind, and that the goal was to \u201cprotect consumers from exceeding mobile data caps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether the current YouTube and Netflix throttling is because of Verizon or Netflix, the only solution for Verizon Wireless customers experiencing this throttling to regain their promised speeds is to use a VPN. Many redditors have confirmed that using a VPN does solve this YouTube and Netflix throttling issue.<\/p>\n
