Governments are still using \u201cterrorism\u201d as a scareword to get any insane law passed \u2013 like Britain\u2019s digital book-burning law. But with its other hand, those same governments are expanding the definition of terrorism way beyond what the public could possibly imagine: the government\u2019s own training material says that peaceful street protests in disagreement with administration policies are examples of terrorism.<\/p>\n

\u201cTerrorism\u201d is still a fnord. If you look up the word \u201cfnord\u201d in a somewhat modern lexicon<\/a>, you\u2019ll come across an explanation that says it\u2019s a word, any word, that makes people break out in a fearful sweat everytime it\u2019s mentioned on the news and agree to any insane laws. \u201cCommunism\u201d filled the same role in the early 1950s<\/a> in the United States, and it\u2019s an actual studied phenomenon in manipulation of public opinion.<\/p>\n

Fnord.<\/p>\n

When we hear a fnord, like Terrorism (or Communism), we\u2019re supposed to fill in the blanks with our most fearful images, regardless of what the word actually means. When the British Home Secretary says people will be imprisoned for fifteen years for \u201crepeatedly watching terrorist material\u201d, we\u2019re supposed to interpret that as Middle Eastern jihadists promoting cutting people\u2019s heads off with a dull knife for being too happy, or something equally reprehensible.<\/p>\n

And so, the public agrees to insane laws that target \u201cterrorism\u201d, all while the government has a completely different definition of what these laws cover.<\/p>\n

It is in these moments that is it crucial<\/em> to remember that street protests are labeled \u201clow-level terrorism\u201d in actual government training material<\/a>. Yes, you read that right: the word \u201cterrorism\u201d, according to the government, includes peacefully disagreeing in public with administration policies<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Among the multiple-choice questions included in its Level 1 Antiterrorism Awareness training course, the [Department of Defense] asks the following: \u201cWhich of the following is an example of low-level terrorist activity?\u201d To answer correctly, the examinee must select \u201cprotests.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes, you\u2019re reading this right: watching training material on how to organize a peaceful street demonstration to make a political point falls completely within the definition of what\u2019s punishable by fifteen years in prison according to the new British law.<\/a> It may not be enforced that way, but it\u2019s still what the law says when connected to the government\u2019s own training material \u2013 and so it can<\/em> be enforced that way, should it prove expedient.<\/p>\n

So next time you hear \u201cterrorism\u201d, remember that it includes the flower-haired woman doing the V sign in the middle of a peaceful petition for redress of grievance.<\/p>\n
