{"id":8336,"date":"2018-07-29T15:00:01","date_gmt":"2018-07-29T22:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/?p=8336"},"modified":"2021-07-29T08:46:20","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T15:46:20","slug":"when-the-threat-is-in-your-home-online-privacy-security-and-domestic-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/when-the-threat-is-in-your-home-online-privacy-security-and-domestic-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"When the threat is in your home: Online privacy, security and domestic violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As digital citizens, we often think about how to secure our internet activity and communications from external sources, including Internet Service Providers, governments, and malicious hackers.\u00a0 For some, including journalists and dissidents, maintaining privacy and security from third parties is an essential part of protecting their\u00a0lives and liberty, and breaches can have dire consequences.\u00a0 However, these risks are not always external, and for victims of abuse and domestic violence, the source of the threat may even live in the same home.\u00a0 For victims of abuse and domestic violence, taking steps to protect their privacy and ensure their online security can be an essential part of successfully escaping and surviving their abusers.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Cox, founder of the Operations Security Professionals Association (OSPA), spoke with PIA this week to discuss ways that victims of abuse and domestic violence can protect themselves from a threat in their home.\u00a0 The cause is an important one to Chris, and to OSPA:\u00a0 OSPA has launched an initiative called \u201cOperation Safe Escape\u201d, with the goal of ensuring that every victim of domestic violence has the resources, information, and confidence that they need to leave their abusive partner.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Safe Escape uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateinternetaccess.com\/blog\/opsec-staying-private-under-surveillance\/\">OPSEC principles<\/a>\u00a0and interdisciplinary partnerships to develop guides, applications, resources and training programs to support victims of domestic violence and to provide safety and security support to domestic violence shelters and safe houses.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we\u2019ve highlighted some practical tips &amp; advice from our conversation with Chris.\u00a0 For more resources, please visit Operation Safe Escape\u2019s website,<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goaskrose.com\/protonmail\/\">GoAskRose.com<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Preparing to leave an abuser<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use private browsing mode.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Most major browsers have a private browsing or \u201cincognito\u201d mode.\u00a0 Use this mode when you are searching for information that you don\u2019t want others to see.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review and edit your browser history.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Although a fully cleared browser history may appear suspicious, you can also remove individual sites from your browsing history.\u00a0 For a guide on how to do this, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/goaskrose.com\/clear-history\/\">this guide<\/a> on GoAskRose.com, a website that Operation Safe Escape has developed for victims of domestic violence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use a VPN.<\/strong>\u00a0 While Chris notes that that traditionally, VPNs are used to protect from external threats, VPNs can also encrypt and hide the nature of local internet traffic, which can be useful if an abuser is monitoring internet activity at the router level.\u00a0 \u00a0A properly configured VPN also prevents DNS leaking, and can disconnect internet access if VPN service is disrupted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develop a safety plan, and keep it somewhere safe.<\/strong>\u00a0 Frequently, guides for victims of domestic abuse include a safety plan that can be printed out, completed and stored.\u00a0 However, a physical plan may be more easily discovered by an abuser, and can\u2019t be accessed remotely if it isn\u2019t readily accessible in a time of crisis.\u00a0 Operation Safe Escape offers a tool for individuals to <a href=\"https:\/\/opsecprofessionals.org\/your-safety-plan\/\">complete their plan electronically<\/a>, and send it to a secure email address unknown to the abuser.\u00a0 Operation Safe Escape has also been working to develop discreet\u00a0apps for Android and iOS where a safety plan can be created and stored on an encrypted server, behind a password-protected login.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For more detailed guides and resources, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goaskrose.com\/protonmail\/\">GoAskRose.com<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Securing devices &amp; your home appliances<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wipe your phone and restore it to factory settings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Especially if your abuser has had access to your phone, may know your passwords, or may be able to guess the answers to your password reset questions, it can be important to fully wipe and restore your device.\u00a0 Many phones have \u201cFind Your Phone\u201d or device management settings that can allow tracking by third parties.\u00a0 For assistance in fully wiping and resetting a device, you can often turn to the device manufacturer.\u00a0 Ideally, even after wiping your device, you will be able to leave your phone behind and access either a temporary \u201cburner\u201d or a new device that has never been accessed by the abuser \u2013 however, this may not always be possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reset your router, and change the access settings for any appliances with internet connectivity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>If you have been successful in getting the abuser to leave your home, it\u2019s important to assess whether they may have access to internet-connected devices in the home.\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/23\/technology\/smart-home-devices-domestic-abuse.html\">recent article<\/a> in the New York Times highlighted how internet-connected \u201csmart home\u201d appliances can be used abusively.\u00a0 As a first step, it\u2019s recommended to reset your router to factory settings.\u00a0 If you\u2019re unsure on how to do so, the device\u2019s manufacturer may be able to assist \u2013 look at the brand names listed on your router and your smart devices, and reach out to their customer service lines for further guidance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review and secure your social media accounts.<\/strong>\u00a0 While you should consider whether it\u2019s possible to delete social media accounts entirely, at the very least, it\u2019s worth removing any content that could be used to locate you and adapting your privacy &amp; security settings.\u00a0 You should also review your secret questions and ensure that your abuser cannot gain access to your account by requesting a password reset.\u00a0 Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) is another way to protect your accounts, even if your password becomes compromised.\u00a0 \u00a0The Crash Override Network also offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crashoverridenetwork.com\/coach.html\">step-by-step guide<\/a> to help you lock down your online accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Privacy &amp;
