You\u2019re getting a decent speed on the internet but as soon as you start torrenting, the speeds drop down to almost nothing. Has it ever happened to you?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s called throttling and is done intentionally by ISPs to regular the network traffic so that there is no congestion.<\/p>\n

Sounds good to hear, but there might be other reasons to throttle your speeds. Sure, they say they do it to keep the network clean but your ISP might purposely throttle your connection and it doesn\u2019t have to do anything with the network congestion.<\/p>\n

For example, ISPs have been known to slow down the internet speeds when they see certain behavior. You might have noticed that speeds go down when you\u2019re torrenting something or when you\u2019re watching Netflix or Hulu.<\/p>\n

While ISPS are supposed to throttle data to prevent network congestion, they also throttle data to discourage certain internet usage patterns.<\/p>\n

How to detect ISP throttling<\/h2>\n

How do you know if the ISP is throttling your connection? Check for these signs.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Your internet speed is fine but gets slow every time you use Netflix or other streaming services.<\/li>\n
  2. Normally, the internet speeds are great but torrenting is slow (even if there are several seeders).<\/li>\n
  3. The download is slow even if the network speed is good.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These signs indicate that your speed might be getting throttled.<\/p>\n

    You can use the Internet Health Test to see if you\u2019re actually being throttled. This test will look for symptoms of congestion in your ISP\u2019s network. However, one test cannot be considered conclusive and you\u2019ll need to take multiple tests for the right results.<\/p>\n

    While you cannot do anything about the bandwidth allocated to you, you can stop ISP data throttling.
    \n\u00a0<\/p>\n

    Use a VPN<\/h3>\n

    A VPN encrypts your data so your ISP isn\u2019t able to see what you\u2019re doing. When your activities are hidden, the ISP will not know when to slow down your connection.<\/p>\n
