help with firefox, question about firefox updating/firewall issue

Firefox automatically notifies me when an update is available. I of course started the update. Things froze and the updater was stuck. It appears the norton firewall for some reason was blocking the updater from executing. Nortons firewall does give false positives of suspected malware. But isn't the firefox updater a known and trusted program? Why would nortons firewall even block it?

  • When Firefox releases a new update, Norton still has to verify it isn't malicious and push that to their update servers which then push the OK to you. That's not accounting for any heuristic detection Norton does, which is probably what flagged it. I assume you can add it to a white-list for 5 or so minutes until you've updated.

If you are really paranoid, web search for anyone with a similar experience (though since it was released yesterday, they will be few and far between) and then decide if you want to trust it or not.
  • Norton kind of sucks. There was a time when Norton would just outright block Firefox. Firefox would be working without any issues and then you'd upgrade it to the latest version and Norton would decide to block it.

Make sure you're updated on the Norton side of things, maybe that'll help, otherwise who knows what might be wrong when Norton is involved.
