If you are really that worried about DNS leaking then manually set the DNS to '4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2'.
@thisisme786 - I am not worried about DNS leaking. I am upset that a PIA option screws up my Internet connection, that the problem has been known for 2 months and that Support went back and forth with me for about three hours before realizing I had experienced a known problem. I want to be able to Disconnect or Exit PIA without loosing my Internet connection. My question is, "Is it safe to Disconnect or Exit with DNS Leak Protection disabled???" Thanks.
Yes, it is safe to disconnect or exit with DNS Leak Protection disabled. That feature only works when you are connected to the PIA's Gateways, it is not intended for direct use.
When using a VPN service one might expect that all of the user’s traffic will go through the privacy network, but on rare occasions a phenomenon known as “DNS leakage” might occur. This means that rather than using the DNS servers provided by the VPN operator, it’s possible that the user’s default DNS servers will be used instead or otherwise become visible.
So when you are not connected to the VPN you are using your ISP's DNS, or unless as stated earlier if you were to specifiy a certain DNS server.
I am not concerned about the dns leakage. I don't use the isp's dns even though it is quicker in most cases. I use opendns or google's dns. Besides that, I am not concerned about the dns leakage, the dns tests have never failed, never spotted a leak. I have only been a member of PIA for a couple of days. I setup my tomato'ed router to handle everything leaving through the vpn. I installed the PIA client as I take my laptop to other locations, which I want to be covered. The application works fine, disconnected while at home under my router's vpn coverage, even works fine if I setup a tunnel inside a tunnel in the case of using my PIA client on the laptop and connecting to a different end point as the one setup in my router, just slower with the added number of hops. I can close the pia app and everything is fine. It was just the initial usage of those two "features" (dns leak and kill switch) that borked my network panel and settings. I had to manually set my adapter using netsh. Luckily I was knowledgeable to do that, others might be in a hurt lock if they could not open their tcp settings for an adapter.
I will give this a try and see if it resolves my issue. Thanks for the link. >Run this and see if it fixes the issue for you:

The reset command is available in the IP context of the NetShell utility. Follow these steps to use the reset command to reset TCP/IP manually:
To open a command prompt, click Start and then type CMD in the Search programs and files.
Right-click CMD.exe icon in Programs and choose Run as administrator.
When the User Account Control box pop up, click Yes.
At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Note If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Reboot the computer.
When you run the reset command, it rewrites two registry keys that are used by TCP/IP. This has the same result as removing and reinstalling the protocol. The reset command rewrites the following two registry keys:
I thought I saw a support user on the forums. Should I ask the support team about this feature to get information regarding the registry keys altered by those features? Or if another process is involved? I guess I could grab a vm, run the installer inside sandboxie or something to figure out what is happening. Has anyone done this already so I don't have to re-invent the wheel?
In msconfig (go to start and type msconfig to open it), within services tab uncheck the 'Hide all mircrsoft services' and disable all the services except of Microsoft corporation. If any MC services are not enabled in services then enable them. Now head over to the start up tab and disable all the items. Click 'ok', then restart.
Thanks for the suggestion. Was happy to give it a try. To confirm: open MSConfig Services tab - I clicked the hide all MS, then clicked disable all. Unclicked the hide MS services and sorted by MS to confirm all MS services were enabled. Start Up tab - I disabled all items. Clicked Apply, then ok, then restarted.
Didn't affect the tcp ip panel. When I click properties while I have tcp ip protocol selected, the panel just starts to open (smaller dialog box than usual) and then closes. A quick flash. I have even tried to do this only with the keyboard to eliminate any double click, or quick close or some odd gesture.
I can't seem to isolate the issue or find another user with similar issue through google search.

I don't have restore enabled. I could go back through some backup images, but it isn't worth the hunting and the regression since I won't know what will resolve the issue. I can live with adjusting the tcp ip settings via netsh command line.
I installed the Private Internet Access clent a couple of days a go and I have this exact problem. I have to reboot my pc to restore my internet connection. I am really hoping this gets fixed soon.
Users who have the DNS leak enabled, are you facing any issues with the latest client available. I have tested it and its working fine, however, your input will also help.
I had the same issue as many others have mentioned: I had been using the VPN for a few days with Kill Switch and DNS Leak Protection enabled, and when I disconnected from the VPN I realized I could not connect to my normal internet connection. After sending two support tickets, I figured the problem out on my own (I am using Windows 7 by the way).
Using some of the information above, I unticked Kill Switch and DNS Leak Protection, then went to network connections and disabled the TAP driver, which made it disappear. I then disabled and re-enabled my wired LAN connection, which did not have any effect besides making the TAP driver re-appear. So then I right-clicked the connection and selected Diagnose, which ran the Windows Network Diagnostics wizard and eventually came up with the problem "DHCP is not enabled for Local Area Connection". I clicked "Try these repairs as an administrator" and the wizard did so successfully. I was then able to log back on to the internet outside of the VPN, and reconnecting to the VPN worked as well.
I was in the exact same situation as isochiem last night. Simple Windows troubleshoot fix, after so much frustration. And all i wanted to do was play a game.
Anyway. My worry now is that PIA can close or crash (not a friendly disconnect or deliberate shutdown) and it'll leave me wide open until i notice. Say explorer crashes and recovers but PIA does not and i'm in bed, there goes eight hours of no protection. Should i reDISable DHCP to ruin the connection when PIA is down?
I had the same problem for a while and I use to do the suggestions above to fix it. I however found a quicker way. You can keep the DNS Leak Protection checked. When you disconnect from the VPN, the only thing you have to do is update your DNS settings. To do it real quick I use Dnsjumper: http://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v1-0-5/ but you can do it manually. I hope this helps!
I had similar experience: lost internet connection, and ended up with an "Unidentified network" (which in fact I still have and have not yet figured out how to delete without further disabling my internet). It took me two hours to fix this (I am not that tech-savy), and I ended up reinstalling my friggin router software as part of my pain. I have printed this thread so I can revisit it as/when it re-occurs, as I didn't find today much fun!
I am not messing with DNS leak until I have more time to explore. I know I am "leaking" via DNS, but I'd rather have that and internet, than no leaking and no internet!
Novices: watch out for this one, it's a nasty problem to have to deal with.
hi that's
because of some dns probe problem at your end....the back end of your server
in working perfectly it's just that your dns has some dicrepencies..I found
the solution for that here in this article..hope it will work at your end
tooo. here is the link :
http://errorcodespro.com/error-code-dns_probe_finished_nxdomain/
While browsing the internet, you may encounter several errors and chances are you browse chrome often then the error code DNS PROBE FINISHED NXDOMAIN is likely to happen. But there’s nothing to worry about because when there is a problem, it comes with a solution.
In the Command Prompt type the following commands and press enter after entering each one of them: ipconfig /release ipconfig /all ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /renew netsh int ip set dns netsh winsock reset
I was having this problem too. I kept getting DNS probe finished bad config I even cleared my browser history and toggle my network connection but It didn't yield immediate effect, but in the second time, it actually did. I tried this solution and it actually works for me.
Canon printers at times show the Canon
