windows 7 issue, windows updates slowing down computer.anyone??llyrie, omni?catcher?

on my windows 8.1 laptop this doesn't seem to be an issue as the I don't notice the automatic updates,,nothing really slows down.

however on my windows 7 laptop if I have it set to do automatic updates, the memory starts being hogged, last night it shot up to 94% memory being used, cpu use was maxed at 100%. This only happens when windows 7 decided to do the updates. I find it annoying because with the memory and cpu being hogged, the computer is unuseable during the updates.

my question is , is there any danger to disabling the automatic updates on windows 7?

  • I have it set to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them or not. It should only take 5-10 minutes of computer usage for it to complete, and then you just have to restart the computer. I would not recommend disabling automatic update notifications, as they can include important security fixes.
  • I entirely disabled automatic updates from day one. I still check for and install them regularly, but never just because Windows wants to.

No notifications, no problems. So long as you remember to check for and update things regularly, there is no problem at all in doing this.
  • We have ours set to notify about updates but not to update automatically. We check routinely once a week for updates. This way we get notifications when updates are available and can choose to update when we decide and get to pick and choose which updates to install or not.

There is no 'danger' to disabling automatic updates, the 'danger' is in not doing any updates. In lieu of automatic updates; Its highly advisable to have the automatic check and notification so you are advised there are updates and that you do the available updates once a week (at a minimum) when advised they are available. Some people choose to turn off the notifications entirely and manually check, but its handy to have a reminder from the automatic check and notification and it does not hurt to have it enabled.
What do you think about upgrading to windows 10 when it is released? Microsoft said its a free upgrade
  • For what little it is worth, Fuck Microsoft. Free is just a bait and switch to them. I have no idea how they intend to make a profit by giving something away, but you can safely bet your genitalia they have a plan to screw you over if you "upgrade".

I am still using Windows 7 x64 and have no intention of trying Windows 8* or Windows 10*. (* in this case means both x32 and x64 versions.)

If I were not a gamer I would still be using Windows XP and laughing at further versions. In truth the only thing that pushed me from XP to 7 is the fact that GPU drivers are not being developed anymore for XP, despite the claims of the GPU makers.
  • I never liked windows 8 or 8.1. But I didn't have a choice when I bought my laptop.

If Microsoft will give free upgrades to existing windows 7 and 8 users I will consider it. Windows 10 on pcs brings back the start menu and familiar windows functions. No more stupid metro tiles or start screen or stupid non-windowed apps.

With windows 10 you can run those stupid modern apps on the desktop

  • For what its worth, I think windows 7 is a good OS. Why Microsoft created windows freaking 8 I will never know.
  • Windows 8 in my opinion was made because Microsoft wanted to merge the interfaces of a PC with the interface for a cellular phone. It supposedly has graphical advancements beyond those in Windows 7, but I remember back when a certain MS game was sold with DX 10 *ONLY* for Vista and above, but a simple replacement of a few DLL files in the game directory made it also work in XP.

So I will never believe what MS says without confirming it, and I will just live with reduced functionality in Windows 7 if that is the price to not have to upgrade.

I use "Classic Shell" for Windows 7, to remove all the stupid effects that I could not be tortured into pretending to care for, and to make things work as they really should by default.

It works. And until I see a reason not to use it, I will consider it essential to any Windows 7 install. And for the record, I do not notice any problems whatsoever with the mod. My current version is 4.10 and has worked so well that I never even checked for updates. I am upgrading to 4.2.1 after this post. (And three hours. I have some very slow downloads going and do not want to interrupt them.)

If I were o guess, the problem you have is likely a combination of the GWX bullshittery that MS enforces upon us, and the "Trustedinstaller" executable that fills up gigabytes of the useless CBS.log files in the system.

GWX is "Get Windows 10" and the TrustedInstaller is started each time you do Windows Updates, even if not automatically. If you kill off and delete the GWX bullshittery, it cannot be reinstalled by Windows Update.

Your search engine of choice will tell you more than you want to know abouit this.
