Switched to qBittorent speed went through the roof.

Wow,

I was getting very frustrated, I'd recently signed up to PIA and was using Utorrent.

I have a 4g wireless Sierra hub, and when connected to the via port frowarded PIA VPN I was getting excellent speed.

Recently changed to Exetel, and my speeds we literally 1/90th speed.   Torrents would start fast then crawl within seconds.   I blamed Exetel and PIA in equal portions.

I swapped to Transmission-QT and same thing happened.

Finally changed to Qbittorrent, and expected the initial speed to die in the ass, nope, 16 hours later, and it's still maxing out the line.

Any idea why Utorrent/Transmission would act this way?

Not really expecting an answer, just thought I'd share my experience.

Make sure qBittorrent is actually using the VPN. Here are some easy to follow steps.
    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/4091/qbittorrent-setup-tips

*Edit* Sorry. I missed the link.
  • Yep, thanks.

I'd read your post about how to set it up, and thought it may be bypassing VPN.

I'm pointing it to my LAN 4 adaptrer which (according to ipconfig) is both using 10.x.x.x and also TAP-Win32 Adapter V9"

However I'm a bit paranoid now..    Is there another way top to ensure this is going out via VPN?

If it is using the TAP device, then you can be certain. As far as I know, there is no way for TAP to connect without the VPN connecting.

You can try making a small zip file of nothing of any importance and making your own torrent of it, then post a magnet link here and someone can try it and report what peers/seeds they get. But that is likely a lot more work than is needed.

I recall someone linked in a site that checks your IP in the torrent client itself by making a custom magnet link so they can track what IP connect to it. But I do not recall what the site was.

Anyone else have a better idea?

(Also, just so it is said in advance, if you make a torrent, please ensure that whatever it is, it is freeware and has no restrictions to keep you from posting it. We try to keep all that off the forums, lest they become associated with such things and thus responsible for it. A copy of the PIA VPN Client from the support page would work perfectly.)

*Note for others.* If he chooses to make a torrent, and you intend to help, grab it and DO NOT SEED it, lest you show up for anyone else who tries to help. Just check the IP of the seed and you are done. You do not even need to finish the download.

*Edit* Disregard the above stuff. The below link will work for you perfectly.
  • Hell. I should have just searched for a half second. Here is one of the tools for this.
    http://dev.cbcdn.com/ipmagnet/

It literally took me about a second to find it... Shame on me. :(
  • qbittorrent will tell you it's external IP in the execution log.  that's a good start.

but the personal magnet link test sites are a good thing to look at too.
  • Excellent, thanks for your help guys!

This is the best Post, I ran into,it Max. out my line, since I tested it with QBittorrent, I was ready to give up and get my Refund, been using utorrent and Bittoreent [ just slow as hell]

Thanks, now I need to fine tune QBittorrent to squeeze out more juice !
  • So does anyone have a theory or explanation for the original question as to why qBittorrent would be faster than uTorrent or Transmission?
  • Beyond the common configuration steps that you need to do in order to maximize your privacy and speeds, variations in performance can likely be attributed to differences in hardware and software (e.g., firewall) set ups, and torrent client implementations at the time. This thread was created back on May 20th, so who can really recall how the torrent clients back then compared to each other?

I mean, in just a few threads down you can find a very recent post stating that qBittorrent speeds on PIA have been terrible lately. (And I totally expect someone to chime in and say that their speeds are fine.)

Don't matter when the thread was created,I have seen the difference downloading from my private Trackers, the speeds that I have been getting with PIA and without PIA, they are pretty much identical using QBittorrent.

    - that is enough for me to stay with PIA and now I can "expand" my territories to Public Trackers, without any qualms....

  • Okay, add one more data point.  Installed portable qBittorrent and I'm seeing roughly 4x the speed as uTorrent.  Same targets, started uTorrent ran for about 10 minutes at a fairly steady speed, stopped it and started qBittorrent and within about a minute I was at my download rate limit.  I have a more modest, and shared, connection than I suspect most of you have, but qb pegged what I've allowed for bandwidth and ut has been limping at about 1/4 of that for weeks now.

    Guess I'm switching to qBittorrent.

  • I do not work for PIA. In fact I live on Social Security Disability. So I am glad to help out. Everyone has to work. And since I am unable to work a normal job, I will contribute what I can here.
