we are in the midst of more than just a copyright infringement war, it is becoming something greater

this is becoming a battle for both freedom and human rights -- it is more than just a battle for and against internet piracy -- it is a battle towards total corporate control over anything and everything people may want -- a battle to control access to information -- to limit and restrict the internet and control our personal lives.

it is more than just an effort to stop torrents -- its an effort to ensure nobody gets a voice to say things are overpriced in one area, but not another -- an increase in the worlds borders, and unified control by corporate groups mainly in the US but all around the world -- it affects all of us, everywhere, all the time, but only a few of us have any say in it.

increasing battles are going on behind the scenes to control the internet, copyright laws including things like medicine and necessities, and also a battle to take away smaller, seemingly insignificant freedoms.

no longer are we free to write whatever programs are technically feasible for a device -- instead, we are headed to a world where every program has to be approved by authorized bodies to determine if it is within their sanctions -- which will no doubt eventually grow to disqualify competitors and innovators.

instead of being able to take the old, unused trash of yesterday and innovate on it and make something new, we are not praised, but scorned, are works destroyed as they want to resell the same thing for a billionth time.

Things are happening, behind the scenes -- where small, insignificant people like you and me are hurt for things like making cookies in the impression of popular characters, innovating on old video games, creating software and modding game consoles which was once a thriving educational hobby, making software for cell phones, providing their people with affordable medical care because the authorized copyright holders charge too much in their areas of the world.

when are we going to say no? when are we going to RIOT in the street over the continued attempts to regulate our internet and our life?

how come none of us get to speak up as to why there SHOULDNT be so much DRM -- why companies need to be knocked down a few pegs.

you want to make money? how about you pull in hard work like you did in the EARLY days -- you know, when you had innovation, and effort put into things.wow us with new content, instead of reselling us the old

understand that things are pirated by people who cannot afford your items, and will never be buying them in the first place -- the losses are less than you estimate. cut piracy, and you simply cut access period - those people will NEVER watch your films or play the games and barely any profit will be gained.

understand that treaties limiting medicine are inhumane -- you want them to buy yours? drive the fucking price down. take a pay cut and no bonus if you want research costs paid, you'll earn it AND the joy of curing sick millions which is worth more than money ever could be.

that little guy making cookies of your game characters? take it as a damn compliment and let him survive for a day. its NOT an international product, and its NOT a huge loss of profit -- providing a service you never intend to, basing the suit only on likeness alone.

we live in an age where simply accessing the services of another nation gets you branded "thief" regardless if someone gets paid at the end of the day -- just because one guy wants more money than the other and is pissy about losing in a competition.

if we have free trade, then how can geo-restriction logically work?

there will come a day when the war hits home, and there will be no safe VPN to hide behind -- no gate barring your home from intruders, and no limitations on how "authority" figures, determined by nothing but wealth alone, are allowed to monitor your behavior, punish you, and control you however they wish.

it is becoming a global oligarchy where the highest bidder wins, deals are held in secret, and some parties are above court orders even when judges stand against them.

SOPA and PIPA like bills are once again gracing our presence -- hidden behind a veiled wall, google is actually fighting it right now.

and whats next?

this is more than piracy -- this is control, manipulation, and a whole ideology.

the DRM, the DMCA. and major industries need restructure, rebuild themselves, and form new goals, methods, and revised laws, and corporations need to innovate, or be left in the dust by smaller competitors willing to provide services the public actually wants.

wealth today is not and should not be a guarantee of wealth and power tomorrow. the market and the people should remain free.

when will we make our tools our own again? when will we take back the right to use hardware as it was meant to be used, WITHOUT limitation, WITHOUT DRM.

when will we take back the freedoms to act independently -- to do what is best for ourselves, our nations, and our families.

when will we say NO?

  • to clarify, yes, I was a bit overdramatic -- but when things start becoming more about controlling people, limiting access to functionality without approval and affecting our freedoms I become quite passionate.

I dont think it is fair to live in an age where copyright is the highest law, where a disc drive or audio files are limited from functioning on audio that is otherwise compatible without specific hardware containing DRM, and overall, the abilities for we, the people ourselves to learn, innovate, grow, and thrive are affected.

I would very much like it if we stopped the growth of tyranny before it reaches a point where everyday life is monitored and maintained by others who supposedly have our best interests in mind but only care about their profits and their power and influence.

Id like things NOT to become a NWO, or even be in the position to -- at least not now, while greed and desperation rule over the minds of our leaders
  • Vote with your wallet and never under any circumstance even hint at *RIOTING* for any reason. Lest you be silenced and your removal be "justified" because you were a "suspected terrorist" or whatever the politically correct term is today.

Obey the law, even when it is unjust. If you are unable to for some reason, please do yourself and everyone else a favor and remain silent about it.

Or go off the deep end, and stick your dick in a beehive. I think we know what you will get either way.

Omni you are saying obey unjust laws? That is interesting. Do you know what civil disobedience is?

    Yes. And yes.
I wonder if Omni obeys the DMCA law
    I avoid it entirely.

Wow, that is shocking to me. I did not expect that from you.

"One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws.
Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."

    MLK
  • People who suggest disobeying the law, even for legitimately good reasons have a tendency to get imprisoned or killed outright if they live in a corrupt society.

So you are effectively asking me to choose to die as a fucking protest that no-one will even bat an eye at. Fuck that. Go get yourself killed for your ideals if you want. I will live on and fight in the very limited and fully legal ways I have at my disposal.

The most potent of these means at my disposal is to try and talk sense into idiots who want to publicly pretend that just because a law is unjust, that they can violate it with impunity.

You are not stupid, but if I did not already know this, I would surely think you were at this point.
  • Omni sounds like he wants to obey the DMCA law since it is officially a law
  • Omni do you also obey the obamacare law?
  • Omni would be an ideal citizen in North Korea or Nazi Germany.
  • Imagine if we all had Omni's POV. We'd be living in a totalitarian state.
  • Omni confuses me. Sometimes he talks about how he hates things like the DMCA law. Then he gets mad and talks about obeying all the laws?
  • I wonder if Omni would've obeyed Jim Crow laws?

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — forever. 1984

Apparently Omni would be perfectly content with this.
  • Slavery was allowable by law until Lincoln's emancipation proclamation during the civil war. I wonder if Omni would have obeyed slavery laws.
  • You two take what I say and clearly do not have the mental capacity of a toddler.

Stop telling me what a monster I am and read what I said again. Then before you spew more stupid shit on the thread, stop and think "Why would a person against such things say this?"

Frankly if you cannot figure this trivial challenge out then you are too fucking stupid to talk shit to me.

    I don't obey the DMCA
  • Omni is upset. Shame he doesn't get upset enough to disobey abominable laws like the DMCA and slavery.
  • Fuck you both. Fuck the DMCA, and fuck slavery. Fuck your juvenile attempts to mock me for saying something you are too fucking stupid to understand.

And last but not least, my apologies to @spiroth10. You did nothing wrong.
  • What are we not understanding? I'm genuinely curious why you are against civil disobedience?
  • What are we not understanding? I'm genuinely curious why you are against civil disobedience?
I am not against civil disobedience. I am against people getting thrown in prison for life because a pissed off cop decided that their protest was too much and claimed that they attacked them.

If you even so much as suggest a riot, there are lunatic "police" out there ready to crucify you in a very Orwellian way. (Yes, I read the book, and knew the quote when I saw it.)

Do not encourage others to do something stupid and get thrown to the wolves. Go throw yourself to the wolves if you really think that is what should happen. There are plenty of idiots who would follow another off the cliff without you suggesting they do it.
  • wow!!!  when I worked in telemarketing we had a term " telephone tough guys " ..people that talked [email protected]#$ on the phone but in person would do absolutely nothing...I'm modernizing it to "online tough guys "...Omni's stance makes the most realistic sense except in extreme circumstances...I'll be patiently waiting for examples of all the causes the other posters on here have made a stand over publicly at the risk of fines and prosecution ( enjoy the crickets chirping and the wind whispering with me Omni  lol )
  • I think you nailed this particular one in your post @moshbeast. Be well, and avoid the things that I refer to as "idiot taxes" like citations for saying or doing something you can easily handle in another way without any chance of reprisal for it.

Be well also Omni...the thing that amuses me the most is these people rallying under the guise of taking a stand against the MPAA, but yet they are hidden under the cloak of a VPN...if they were truly taking a stand, wouldn't they just download and upload openly and often. allowing the MPAA to build a case against them so they could go to court and defend the notion that an IP address is not a person, or that file sharing is not truly theft ? Am I not correct in this assumption?  their postulating is ludicrous!!

Really? How about what happened to the Pirate Bay guys? Or is that too "extreme"? What about Aaron Scwarz? Charged to the point of suicide for advocating an open internet. Is that too "extreme" too? How about the Austrian Tor exit node operator arrested for providing anonymity online in protest of the ever increasing surveillance state we live in? Gee I hope that's not too "extreme" too.

But I guess to you and Omni their efforts weren't "worth it." I'd hate to imagine the world were everyone to abide by that mindset.

I would hate to live in a world full of idiots who think they cannot and will not be singled out and imprisoned for violating the law.

And do not continue the childish jest that I said anything other than what my words actually mean. I do *NOT* support these stupid laws, but I know better than to be the one who determines if a courtroom will actually enforce a stupid law.

And not that it matters, but you meant "where" in place of "were".
  • So the threat of imprisonment should impede all calls for change? Tell that to Edward Snowden, Aaron Swarz, Ladar Levison. That is truly a warped view to have.

    And no, I meant were.
  • I guess they were all "idiots" though.
