Suggestions: PIA app improvements

1. Menu bar icon: change colors when connected vs. not connected (e.g. green for connected, red for not connected). Presently it goes from grey (disconnected) to darker grey (connecting) to black (connected). The transition isn't always obvious (I'm speaking here of the OSX version only -- not sure how the other versions display).

2. "Bypass" feature under Settings: ability to add specific urls that bypass PIA VPN. This is needed because there are many sites that block access from VPNs (e.g. what.cd). PIA Support says, "Just disconnect when you need to go to a site that blocks/bans VPN access." That's a lame workaround, not a solution.

  • Thanks for pointing me in a helpful direction. Initially it appeared that there was no Mac app to do what I wanted and that my only option would be to manually add static IP routes via Terminal commands.

However, after much searching I came across a very handy and intuitive OSX app that's able to do what I need, RouteSplit. https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/35754/routesplit/index.html So far it's working quite well, and it's donationware.

I'm curious about your assertion (which to me seems rather alarmist): "be warned though, messing with the routing table and inserting such static routes could impact your traffic security..." Please help me understand why setting up static routes to bypass an active VPN is a security risk.
  • Thanks for the note of caution. It's much appreciated. But I tend to be one who isn't overly trusting when it comes to the use of proxies and vpn, etc., which is why I regularly check ipaddress.com, just to be sure. I also run BwanaDik continuously.

    Thanks again for your help!
