Slow OpenVPN speed: Asus RT-AC3200 ( Merlin )

edited September 2015 in VPN Setup Support
Hi,

I have recently purchased the Asus RT-AC3200 router and upgraded to the latest Merlin firmware 378.55.  Having configured the OpenVPN, the SPEEDTEST is on the low side with only 14Mbps download and 5Mbps upload.

However when using the software applications for iPad or Desktop provided by PrivateInternetAccess the speeds are on the high end up to 98Mbps.

Is anyone able to advise why the speed is slower when using OpenVPN on the router, I've read it's possibly CPU related, but surely I should get better download speed than 14Mbps from the router. Are the settings missing something ?

My configurations are as follows:

I have this exact same router, but kept the stock firmware.  I get the exact same result.

Normally my speeds are 200Mbps down and 20Mbps up, but using the OpenVPN connection through the router drops them to what you reported - 15Mbps down.  I tested this multiple times by turning the OpenVPN service on the router on and off and testing through SpeedTest.net.

Using the desktop app for PIA I have no problems at all - down and up speeds are normal.

This router also has a PPTP and L2TP option for using VPN, but when setting those up I get a authentication error.  So I have not been able to test those connections, only the OpenVPN setup.

Curious as to why this would be, any help would be appreciated.

I also have slow speeds on Asus AC68U. When I first signed up for PIA, I had no loss in bandwidth, until about 2-3 weeks ago. Not sure what changed. At some point last week, I was lucky if i had 5mb down. I'm supposed to have 35. after many unhelpful interactions with support, I tweaked the settings using many different sources. I Still don't have full speeds, but at least its slightly better than you. In my case, I get around 23mb down and 12 up.

Try and report back to see if it helps:

  • I'm gettting 60Mbps on PIA 128aes with Merlin firmware. Upgrade to 380 firmware if you have not done so already. It has open vpn vpn optimization. You need to move your vpn client to client 2 or 4 or both, not 1,3, 5 as that is where ovpn optimization is.

This is my custom config. Remove comp-lzo if  you have it in gui.
    tls-client
    remote-cert-tls server
    reneg-sec 0

  • Also add verb 3 and save and check the log to see what is going on.
Compression move to none and dns exclusive but strict is ok too. Exclusive is safer as it will not use your isp dns.

I also have a asus rt-ac68u and upgraded my firmware to merlin 380 latest one and i'm suppose to be getting 35 down and i'm only getting 10. I followed all the setting you guys had and tried messing with it for hours without any luck.
  • I have been testing it on my AC66U with the newest Merlin firmware installed. The speeds regardless of which server i connect to are completely useless. Hovering around 3-5mbs up/down while my speeds without running OpenVPN on the router are around 100/100.

I expect some loss of speed when running the VPN on the router, but ~95% loss of speed seems excessive.

50p says it is because you have Automatic Quality of Service enabled. Check if it is. If so switch it off and then test the speed. I had exact same issue and found disabling automatic quality of service sorted it. i ended up using traditional quality of service option.

Heres my kak video showing the issue...

    cheers
