New Mac Client v.49 Released with El Capitan Support

Hey all!

We've just released an updated version of our Mac OS X VPN application, which you can find here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/installer/download_installer_osx

SHA-256 Checksum: 30ea7cfc5b0a8373be52c2c02391d1f896498637ac47757efeedfc660ed0868f

This new version (v49) is a minor update recommended for all users who plan to upgrade or have already upgraded to Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). It also resolves an issue with port forwarding that was introduced with the v.48 release earlier today.

  • I have problems with this version.
    Cannot connect to any.

I think the problem is with:
El Capitan + new pia + new eset pro - before no problems

    Soft that also updated
    1) Pia connect
    2) Eset pro (firewall + av)

Before they were working together on yosemite.

    Also:
If I disable firewall and then connect via pia - all working
if I enable eset firewall - pia not working

all permissions to pia given. esets firewall allow all connections via pia but this is still not working.

    help me. can't work.

    thanks.

  • This works for me now!  Thanks a bunch, PIA team! :)
  • Any word on an update for the Windows version??
  • edited October 2015
Thanks, Works on El Capitan on MacBook Pro Retina.
On mac the icons are still blurry. The mono Icons seem not to be blurry so I changed some of the file names around so that the PIA app would use them instead and I also edited the mono icons to have colours depending on when disconnected, connecting and connected. If anyone is interested i can upload the modified icons.

Icons are located in [ ~/.pia_manager/pia_tray.app/Contents/Resources ] (Use Go to folder in Finder)

  • Still having problems when mac (El Capitan, also did it on Yosemite) wakes from sleep. PIA stays in connecting state and will only connect if Wi-Fi is turned off then back on.
  • Web pages would not open after OS X El Capitan update, however,i downloaded the PIA update and all is working again.
  • whenever I disconnect the VPN, with the DNS leak protection on, I can still surf the web. any suggestion?

I already deleted and reinstalled and the only thing that solved was the connection time.
  • Not working for me. Fresh install.
It tries to connect but nothing happens.
  • This worked for me, at first.  However, I'm using 10.11.1 Beta and after doing the upgrade to Beta 3, the PIA app does not launch at all.
  • I was having it hang on "connecting" after waking from sleep as well, but the fix posted for previous versions worked:

    1. go to ~/.pia_manager/
    2. open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options...
    3. drag pia_manager, pia_tray, and openvpn_launcher into the firewall window to add allowances for them

You should be able to connect again. I don't know how long it will last though, I did this fix with previous versions and it still eventually hung up and needed a restart to fix it.
  • This doesn't work!  As soon as I connect, my email IMAP connections are broken.  What's going on???

A little more info:  I am using OS 10.11 El Capitan.  Everything worked great in Yosemite.   Before v.49 I could not connect to iCloud - I think this part is fixed.

I tried the L2TP setup as well, and this doesn't seem to work either
  • Seems to be working after total reinstall, not just launch of new installer.  Followed this direction:  https://support.privateinternetaccess.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/52
  • Fresh install and changing the connection type to TCP and the remote port to 443 to ensure the app connects around OSX firewall works with me..

  • I have noticed with the latest PIA app, speed tests show slow performance compared to using Viscosity.  Browsing the web though, I do not see any difference.

I'm on a cable connection 50 MB down/25 MB up
I have both apps configured to use UDP
PIA app I get 6 MB down/6 MB up
    Viscosity I get 48 MB down/25 up

So with Viscosity I get my advertised speeds, can anyone else test using PIA app?
  • Having issues with the last OS X update for El Capitan.  It will not connect, the console log says:
com.apple.kextd[52]: ERROR: invalid signature for net.tunnelblick.tun, will not load

    And help?
  • I'm running beta  el capitan 10.11.2 Beta  and .49 isnt working after a clean install of the app.
  • No luck here after installation this morning of 10.11.2 Beta (15C27e), the most recent release from Apple.  PIA chat support (Dave) tells me that since the OS is beta, they can't be expected to support it.  This makes sense, but to offer not workarounds, etc., is poor customer service.

  • I have El Capitan v 10.11.1 release software on one partition and 10.11.2 beta on another partition.
PIA v.49 is now broken on both versions (it was working fine on 10.11.1 beta downloaded 10.11.2 beta and it is broken.
Tried the suggested rolled up trouser leg at low tide fix with no success, three times on both partition versions.
  • You have to disable the new system protection scheme.  The problem is that the driver isn't properly signed.  Which, doesn't seem like something there is a good excuse for.  If you disable the new protection scheme in Recovery OS, it will allow the loading of unsigned kext's.

I think this is very unprofessional of the team at PIA.  If they can't properly sign the kext, I'd like to know what the issue is.  A security app that requires disabling security to use.
  • Hi,

i have the same problem with 10.11.2...OK it's an beta but an workaround would be nice!

    thx
  • I was able to get it working again by disabling extra protections they added to El Capitan as suggested by dwhager.

  • Also, just a bug report...  When connecting on startup, the icon does not update in the menu bar to show a connected state.
  • Does anyone have a link to the older version?  This version .49 is horrible.  Now I can't get it to stay running, it just crashes and takes my network stack down with it.  So, yeah, v.46 worked just fine if anyone has it.

As far as I am concerned, this is very disappointing.  I can't imagine what would possess the coders to release a version this buggy.
  • I am trying to install PIA onto my macbook running El Capitan. The installer loads but when I click it nothing happens. Can someone help?

if you read through this thread, seems v49 does not work very well, or at all on El Cap.
I would suggest reaching out to PIA support, maybe more voices will get them to fix it!
  • Contacted support, it was suggested that I reinstall my entire mac, to downgrade to Mavericks to use the latest VPN.  Not liking that option, I am now using Viscosity...  And you know what, I don't have have to disable SIP to make it work.

For the win.  So worth the $10.
  • Reverted back to v.46 and everything has been working well. I can only assume the TunTap drivers are a little outdated but I can live with that. A truly progressive company would pony up the $100 for a Apple developers account and be actively coding through the OSX betas. Alas, that doesn't seem to be the case here. Disabling SIP or for that matter any core functionality is a bad idea. Until they fix this by code signing the kernel extension as required by Apple, this application is dead. I have Viscosity on my portable and it works great but lacks a few of the features of the PIA app. It is much more actively developed and you can even opt in to beta builds.
