NVIDIA Shield TV

Hi All,

I have just taken delivery of a new NVIDIA TV and I was keen to use PIA on it. I have already signed up for a year, but it doesnt seem I can use PIA natively on the device. I had considered sideloading but have not been successful.

Does anyone have any tips or guide? Thanks
Rossco

  • Hello Rosscouk

Devices such as these do not directly support VPN connections. It is possible to connect the devices to the VPN however. More information can be found in the following link in our Knowledge base:

  • Thanks for the reply.

I don't think my router will do this, its a BT Homehub 5, I am in the UK.

Is there any way to sideload?

Yes you can sideload the PIA android app on the Shield TV, and it works!
first you need to download the apk first from the app store, and then install it on the Shield TV. For the initial setup you will need to connect a mouse, but then you can configure the app to auto-connect, so you dont need it in future tries

No it don't. Every method I have tried fails terribly. The PIA app has no menu and no way to import any ovpn file. You cant even get to a screen to enter username and password. The closest I have come was using OpenVPN for Android but it too fails after entering all the pertinent data. How the heck did you get PIA working on your Android TV device when no one else can? Don't just tell people, PROVE IT or it didn't happen.

I have a Shield TV and the app works perfectly fine.  I sideloaded the 1.1.7 apk by installing it via ES File manager.  I didnt need to use any special ovpn or anything so if you cant get it to work or even open, you must not be installing something correctly.  I installed, opened app via sideload launcher app and logged in with my username and password from PIA.  I did plug in a usb mouse to make navigation easier and for sure needed if you want to change service although auto connect works fine for me.  If i need a UK service for anything i will just have to plug the mouse back in.  Now I did have to go into the settings of the app to click the check to use TCP for it to work.  I also checked to use the killswitch for my own safety and I also checked to auto start on boot.  I went to http://ipinfo.io/ after it said connected, via browser in ES File manager and I confirmed it is working perfectly.  I wanted to P2P via Kodi and stay safe and didnt want to mess with the hassle of VPN'ing my entire router so this PIA is doing its job via this app.

  • I concur this does work beautifully. But here's the deal. I lose connections to network drives. I use kodi and have an library collection. Once connected to pia I lose that connection to local media. Thoughts?

Hello I can use ipvanish with my Nvidia Shield, I hope soon I can use PIA in it.
  • Yeah p5736170 is a idiot. He claims no one else can do it, yet the truth is that everyone but him can do it. I have three shields in the home and all three work perfectly fine with the pia app.
  • We have a guide for sideloading our .apk file on to an Amazon Firestick.  The steps may not align exactly with your Shield, but the steps will be similar.  The important parts of our guide are installing a file manager and adding mouse functionality to your device.
