Android-How to use " Allways-on VPN"

For android,
"Allways-on VPN" turns VPN on every time you turn on Wifi.
( no need for any other apps ) ( don't need to have the PIA app )

I have been looking for a way to turn on VPN without having to turn it on manually every time I was out connecting to wifi. Some places are stored wifi and when you walk in . Your phone will auto connect. Then you have to remember to turn the VPN on every time.

Like when you walk into a Store. Your Phone will auto login to the Wifi and google ( any app) like to check for update. ( email,FB,...). ops your passwords was just used.

To set it up : (Taken from PIA setup with additions )

1. Open Settings and tap on Wireless Controls
2. Tap on VPN Settings
3. Tap on Add VPN ( Basic VPN or + )
4. In the VPN Name field, enter Private Internet Access
5. For Type, Choose L2TP/IPSec PSK

Change: ( PIA want you to add Server address as a url )
You need to add it as a IP address.
Choose the Server you want to use and reverse lookup The IP Address.
I used IP-traker.org. Any will work.

I'm using us-east.privateinternetaccess.com

6. In Server address Enter :  208.167.254.225

Back to the normal:

7 . Leave L2TP Secret, and IPSec Identifier blank
8.  In the IPSec Pre-shared key type:  mysafety

Changed again :

9. Click on the " Show Advanced Options "
10. Leave DNS search domains blank

These is PIA DNS address : 209.222.18.222 and 209.222.18.218
Does not matter what one you use.

11. type in : 209.22.18.222

12. 10. Leave Forwarding Routes blank

Back to normal:

13.  Tap Save

14. Tap on the VPN you just made: Private Internet Access
15. Enter your Generated Username and Password ( the one you Generated  in your account)

16. Check Save account information if you want to save the password
17. Tap Connect

You should see a Key Icon in the status bar.  Great Job. you did it right.
Go make sure to work. Open up a browser or any thing to test it out , then come back.

Ok.  So,it works.

Next Step is to Turn on " Always-On VPN "

1. Open Settings and tap on Wireless Controls
2. Tap on VPN Settings
3: look for the 3 dots on the top right .
4. Click on it.
5. Click on : Always-On VPN "
6. Choose : Private Internet Access
7. Click OK.

You should now reboot your phone.

As you will see you VPN will come on anytime the Wifi is on.

Now you can go anywhere and not have to worry about your saved Wifi auto logging in.
Then your apps auto checking things. Sending out your User/Passwords to get logged.

Thanks for this! Question: I just upgraded to Nougat and as soon as I connected to an open hotspot, it asked if I want to enable Google's VPN for public hotspots. Do you have any knowledge of how this compares to PIA? Should I keep using my always-on VPN with PIA the way you described or is the Google one comparable or possibly preferable for some reason?
  • Actually, I think I just found my own answer. The stock Android VPN currently requires you to enable it for every new public hotspot, so I guess it's back to your method (for now, at least!)! The PIA app does seem highly integrated into the Nougat shell though, and even has options to start automatically at boot. It'd be great to hear if you or anybody else with more knowledge than I knows if one or the other method has any advantages i.e. less power consumption, etc.
  • I don't know what step 15 is. How do I get this? Please help me out, everything else I got up to that point.

The latest PIA app can be set to autostart on boot and auto-connect
  • Followed the instructions and probably did something wrong. Trying to set up Pia on android tv box. When I try to connect it says unsuccessful. I have been using Pia on PPTP and connects fine but the "always on vpn" would not work. Found these instructions doing a search but will not connect. "Always on vpn" is now available if I could get it to connect. Any help would be appreciated

  • Note that the use of a PSK for the IPSec connection means that the connection can be MITMd by any host able to get in between you and the PIA server.
  • Don't understand 'reserve lookup'.
I downloaded Opera VPN (settings) it works perfect on smartphone.
For my tablet I also downloaded Autostarter. (for boot)
    Everything works perfect.
