Anyone else? New vpn client, almost no speed at all?

edited December 2015 in P2P Support
Hi,

the only change i have made to my setup was to replace the vpn client as recommednded last week.

i have gone from 3500KB/s+ download speed to under 200KB/s!!

Again, the only change is the new client...

Anyone else getting this after the change?

ok, i've been a PIA customer for 18 months - and a very happy one too...
I was reporting what has transpired  over the last week after installing the new client.
The ONLY change is the new vpn client. 90% slowdown...
But I will investigate further as its possible my ISP has changed their policies regarding p2p traffic.

I'll be back

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to inform you squeekers:

Speed without vpn client:  94.25 Mbps down

Speed with vpn client:   6.51  Mbps down

  • New client is terrible, everyone is having slow speeds.
  • Not everyone.

  • I'm having the same issue.  Not just torrents.  All internet access is slowed.  DNS resolution takes a few seconds or never responds, web pages only partially load or never at all.

Speed test tells me I'm getting about 4 Mbps with VPN on.  Without it, I get about 60Mbps and everything works fine.

Downgrading to the previous client put everything back to normal.
  • I'm having severe speed problems since the update as well. I wanted to downgrade to the previous version but I can't find a way.
  • You know what, I thought I'd give torguard a try and even though it's more expensive ($60/year vs PIA $36ish), wow it's super fast and torrents are working fine. I had also tried ExpressVPN this week, which not only didn't work but also made it so I couldn't access the internet without it (it set a Static DNS). ExpressVPN is also $100/year.

So yeah, try Torguard out. Goodbye PIA, it's been a good run.

I've also been having connection issues since the recommended upgrade. Torrent speeds are around 1mb but trying to connect to ANY web page is a nightmare. Basically, click on a bookmark and go make a coffee while it loads (half the time it will time-out before it loads now)
When I turn off the VPN the speed and connections are fine (WHEN I can connect, most of the time when I disconnect the VPN, my internet access disappears too).

Please PIA, a lot of us have paid good money for this service. Even if you don't want to answer all these queries, at least put out a comment that you acknowledge that you have a problem, and are hopefully dealing with it.

    Speed without client 54/3
    Speed with client 10/1 (average)

Uninstalled the latest crippled version and reinstalled an old one I found (.35)

    Speeds now:

    35/2.5

Torrent speed is now the same as above.

Just read the email from PIA again (duh) and it says that it's the port forwarding feature that's affected, as I don't need port forwarding, I guess I'll be fine with the older version.

  • Does anyone know where I can get the older version?

I was lucky to find one in my downloads folder. Shame on PIA for not providing an older version.

Could you upload it to tinyupload.com for me?
  • I have v36 through v46 here. Not where you asked, but this should work.

If not, then let us know and I will see what else I can do.
  • That's better.  Even though the number of cities I can connect to is severly limited now, I at least have smooth Internet access while running PIA.

exfat I'd still like the installer for v51 if you have it.
  • Thank you for this thread. I am having the same problems. All was brilliant until I 'updated' - now nothing works via VPN - not just torrenting, but any webpage I try opening when PIA is activated. So thank you for the link to the previous version, I will try installing a previous version and keep my fingers crossed.
  • I also had severe issues with the new version (both using torrents and just doing normal web browsing), and downgraded to v46 to fix them. There are some links to a v46 download in another forum post (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/620/have-speed-issues-start-here#latest), but if anyone has links to v47-v52 please post them.

Even though my speed issues were fixed, but I am wondering what downsides there are of being on an older client? Does anyone know? I saw the notice about the security exploit being fixed in the new version, but I have no idea how unsecure this makes the older versions....does anyone know?

I attempted to contact customer service with this question, but they were as unhelpful as they possibly could be, so I am hoping someone here on the forums will be more knowledgeable than customer service was...

    I don't have v51, I had v35. Sorry.
  • Hi I am having severe speed problems on vpn as well I mostly use the sydney Australia server but have tried other servers.

I was unsure weather to post here as we recently had to replace our cable modem as our old one died.  The replacement is not new as we had it sitting around for a year because of the hassle of swapping them the new one is a netgear CG3000 I also decided to update my vpn client when I was setting up my connection.  But now I regret updating I asked PIA on twitter if I could download the old version but they said no as it is a security risk.

I am only getting about a 100kbps and strange thing is happening where I can not use a browser and torrent or download at the same time I think the PIA client is limiting the amount of connection allowed.  Also have a question.

How do you tell what version you have installed?

Also when I updated I fully uninstalled the old version including the tap driver and am running windows 7 64bit.

Thanks to anyone who read this.  And thanks for the reply.

According to the email I received from PIA, it's only the port forwarding feature that's at risk. If you don't use port forwarding, I can only assume that a previous version will be okay.
  • On r46 my computer no longer crashes when I close PIA while a video is playing.

I've also uploaded it to TinyUpload in case OmniNegro's link gets taken down.

When using PIA v53 by itself all is well - browsing & downloading files from web sites is OK.
But as soon as I start uTorrent, my connection speed drops to nothing (a minute to load a web page).
Stop uT & everything is OK again.
Tried changing pretty much every setting in the PIA client to no effect.
    Reinstalled a couple of times.
Installed HideMyAss and that works fine too.

Contacted support who referred me to the PIA page for setting up OpenVPN.  That works well BUT there is no Kill Switch option which is pretty important to me.

So, on the one hand I'm happy that support provided a workaround, but on the other I'm unhappy that there's no fix.

I'm sure a bit of Googling will show me how to get OpenVPN to remember my username/password, but is there a way to set it up to emulate the PIA Kill Switch functionallity?

Edit - When asked, Support told me that "there is no previous version" which I thought was misleading to say the least.  Any thoughts as to what is the best (stable &secure) previous version to use and (if it's not one of the ones above) where to get it?

v51 would be best, since it's before the connection problems started (v53 was released like 2 days after v52), but I'm running v46 without any problems.  I can't find it anywhere though.  Just use v46 for now.

When using PIA v53, my speeds for torrents were limited to an average of less than 10 kB/s.  Now that I switched back to PIA v46, speeds are now back up to over 1 MB/s  Also, all of my internet connections were super slow with PIA v53. Technical help was no help at all.  I even tried switching between UDP and TCP, which had a minor boost, but nothing significant.  I don't use port forwarding, so this shouldn't be a problem for me.  Thanks for uploading the older versions.  I really appreciate it!
    MAHALO!
  • FYI, v.56 is out now, and I was using v.53 with similar results.

Since switching to v.56 minutes ago, my speed has returned.  I am able to connect at roughly 25 megabit (3 megabytes) per second, where on v.53 I was lucky to get 1 megabit.

Please please PIA, in the future, put your new releases on your home page, and properly mark your revision history of your clients!

I had to contact Steve (?) using the online support to even know this client existed.  If you don't check forums, which I didn't until just now, I would have never known and just kept cursing PIA's recent problems.

Yup absolutely had this problem.  Worked perfectly on v51 and before. they sent an email about the issue so I upgraded and everything went to crap. Could hardly connect to web pages at all.  Tried all the settings, also tried lowering my MTU.  Anybody saying its your ISP, I just changed ISP's cause I moved and same issue.  I did try the newest, same problem.

So finally I reverted back to the newest version I could find in this thread prior to v52, which was v46.  BOOM, everything working perfectly again.  Connecting super fast as it did.

Does anyone have v51 windows installer??  That was the last newest one I had that was working I believe.  For now I am sticking with v46.

It seems a lot of the complaints about this all seem to be running win 7 64bit, as I am,  but I could be wrong.
  • PIA support do  not have V.51 (Let delete all older versions when a new installer is released which I tink it hard to thing they do not keep backups)

Please if someone has V.51 will be great else I will have to go else where to get good speeds 1Meg to the usual 40Meg

You're lucky to even get 6.5 Mbps down. Every time I connect to the VPN, doesn't matter what region, my connection slows down to a crawl. I am unable to even open websites within 30 seconds per page. I am seriously considering getting rid of PIA and finding another VPN. These speeds have been happening to me for the past 2 or 3 months. Without the VPN? I am downloading from uTorrent at around 5 Mbps, with the VPN? I am downloading from uTorrent at around 20 Kbps.
  • I am new to PIA and am having the same issues as described above.
I have done some testing with one of my friends who is also new to PIA and he is experiencing no issues what so ever and getting almost unaffected download speeds on multiple machines.
Below is what i sent to PIA's support team hoping to get some useful information back, however I have not yet received any. If anyone on here can provide any additional information/suggestions it would be much appreciated.
Please let me know if anyone has any questions necessary for them to provide me with some feedback.

    Thank you all!

I understand that torrent support is going to be rather limited no matter what VPN service I am going with.

It just doesn’t seem to make any sense whatsoever. We both attempted to download the exact same torrent, on the exact LAN connection and speed differences were staggering.

We then attempted logging in on my system with his PIA credentials and were experiencing the same results.

We verified all settings in Vuze were identical, all of the PIA/Encryption settings are identical.

    Torrenting aside,

Both computers are less than a year old and rather high end systems. (i7, 32gb RAM, SSD, etc.)

While running internet speed tests, on my friends system he is experiencing less than a 2% drop from his standard download speeds.

While running internet speed tests on my machine I am experiencing around a 70-80% drop in download speed.

All of these tests being ran side by side on the same LAN connection.

I have to believe that PIA’s support team should be able to have some additional insight into this issue. I can’t be the only person to have ever experienced this issue.
