PIA has let me down for the last time

I've been using PIA for some time.  I have everything set correctly, as far as I know - kill switch enabled, IPv6 Leak protection, and any time I want to download a torrent, I go to three different websites to confirm that I am anonymized, including whoer.net, IP/DNS Detect, etc.  They all tell me I'm good to go - no leaks of any kind.

Obviously, it is not working for me AT ALL - I've received many letters from my ISP and I'm now very nervous and concerned.
Recently there was a new version put out, which I promptly installed.  I got another letter the next day.  I don't know why everyone else seems to be protected and I am not, but I cannot afford to have my ISP cut off my service.

Unfortunately, I'm going to immediately cancel my subscription.  I'm not any more protected than if I didn't use anything at all.  Very upset and disappointed.

  • Have you verified that your torrent app isn't bypassing your vpn connection? Try using http://ipmagnet.services.cbcdn.com
  • Hi tomeworm!  Thanks so much for replying.
I did indeed use that method as well, keeping an eye on the "fake" magnet link.  It didn't say once that there was an issue.  I just don't get it.  At no point did any of the "leak detector" websites tell me that I had a problem.

BTW, the new and improved update would not allow me to port forward the port it specified when I moused over it.  Furthermore, at some point I noticed that PIA had spontaneously disconnected...but Transmission was still downloading.  It would seem that the kill switch did not do its job.  I am so disappointed.  Had PIA worked for me, I'd have just kept subscribing forever.  Now I need another solution.

Does anyone know if BTGuard is any good?  It can't be any less safe than PIA for me; the letters have become scarier...

when you get these letters from your internet service provider does it show you the time and also with what client you used to download with ? also it  should say with what  ip address you were using at the time of your downloads.i can't understand if everything was good when you checked on the sites mentioned above.try manually installing pia's dns address. The addresses are 209.222.18.222 and 209.222.18.218.

  • Thanks floraluca - they seem to know everything; the file I was downloading, date and time, the file size, my IP address and the port number used.

Am I doing something wrong/stupid?  The IP is what I get from my ISP, but my main computer is running Mac OS X Server and its own DNS server.  So - the laptop I am using for downloading torrents has a 10.10.x.x IP to begin with.  Is this the problem?  That I must use my main computer and not my laptop?  I don't really want to cancel my PIA account and try something else, but I'm not sure what else to do.

I've always used the PIA app (which sits in my menu bar).  I'm so frustrated.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong (if anything).  And thanks for the help guys - I really appreciate it.

  • You can check your torrent ip with htis tool.

    https://torguard.net/checkmytorrentipaddress.php

Also use a browser add-on like httpseverywhere so you get a secure connection to most sites.

Be sure that the uTP protocol is not enabled on your bittorrent client.

I was seeing my firewall drop connections that tried to come straight back to me, bypassing the VPN, often enough to chase it.

In my case, I use transmission to download with and if uTP was enabled, some hosts in the swarm were seeing my real IP address.  With uTP disabled, I'm not seeing those connections dropped.
