What is your favorite Science Fiction films and series? And what did you like and dislike about them

Hello everyone. I was never much of a Star Wars fan, but do not let me stop you from talking about it if you like.

*Rules for this post*
1) If you can't have a civil discussion do not post.
2) No vulgarity or harassment of other users or their opinions.
3) Try not to ruin the movies or series for those who may not have seen it.
(The rules here were shamelessly stolen from the Star Wars post made by TinyTRex. Thanks for the ideas.)

So tell us what you like and dislike? What genre of sci-fi is best for you and what bores you to tears? Do you like time travel? Faster than light movement? Fantasy stuff dressed up as science fiction?

I think my favorite Science Fiction movie was Ex Machina. It seemed to drag out until just before the end. Then the whole story came together and it was a surprise in more than one way.

My favorite Science Fiction series was Stargate SG1, followed closely by Stargate Altantis. I liked them because they were not so much of a stretch to believe. They still had the nonsense pseudo-science that is in almost if not all science fiction, but it was dressed up better much of the time, or at least they made the changes to the story over a long enough time that you could adjust and discard the disdain for pseudo-science that they had.

I have not even told you anything about the story. If you are like myself, you may have to just grit your teeth and bear through it a while. Then you will either want more or not. It does not spoil the story in one episode. It stretches it out over many. And you do not have to have ever seen the Stargate movie that predates the series to enjoy this.

If you have not watched them, then I suggest you do. Many commercial sites will sell a streaming service to let you watch them. Amazon, Netflix, and others all have them.

So what are your favorites? And why are they favorites?

    Hey Omni !!

Great post !!! I like the idea of the rules they should hopefully help keep it civil !!!

As for your choice to revolve around the SG franchise.... Great choice !! I have seen all of SG1 SG: Atlantis and SG: Universe. It has to be one of my all time favorite TV series.  Although Sheppard and O'neil I found to be better leading characters then that of SG: Universe.

However that is just my two sense worth, as well as the SG shows I also enjoy Smallville, Flash, Gotham, Arrow, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Suits, Blue Mountain State and Brooklyn 99 to name a few! Not all Sci-fi but all worth a mention hahah!

Why do I like them... Well anything to do with Super Heroes Marvel or DC interest me because my son insists on watching them and well you get use to it then you start enjoying them even if you thought you wouldn't!

Edit* What bores me.... Dr Who not sure why just can't get into it ! Sorry to anyone who really enjoys it,  it's just not for me I guess lol

    Cheers,
    Jason M

  • I'm sure this isn't the sort of answer you're looking for, but here goes: Mystery Science Theater 3000. I get the DVDs from Netflix, but many episodes are available on YouTube.

"Revel in mind-numbingly bad cinema with this series that's become a stunning cult phenomenon. The show's hosts, robots Tom Servo and Crow, along with their human sidekick, are trapped in a space satellite and pass the time by airing questionable B-movies, all the while interrupting with hilarious commentary."

Quite a few of the shows are of sci-fi movies. The worse the movies the more entertaining the show.
  • All the Marvel stuff is what I call Fantasy Science Fiction. I watch some of it, but It is not my cup of tea. But then again, I have probably watched every episode of everything mentioned here so far, so I guess you could say I am a fan.

The Dr Who stuff is really an odd sort of thing. I find it hard to even describe why I watch it, and why I dislike it. I suppose I like a show where the "good" guys are not always the winner, and in Dr Who that is almost always not going to happen.

Dr Who in a nutshell: Unarmed Pacifist Time Traveler who looks exactly like an average Human. He goes everywhere in all of time and space and defeats everyone who ever attempts to do anything bad with a sonic whatever device that may as well be a magic wand.

There you have it. The stories vary greatly in quality. Some are actually decent, if you can ignore the nonsense. But then some are plainly awful travesties of cinema.

MST3K is one I remember. I watched some of it and at times was reminded of CSPAN. Some was funny too. The movies were pretty bad. But you do not watch it for the movies. You watch it to watch the mockery of the movies.

    Hi @Omninegro ;

Yes Mystery Science theater at one time use to be one of my favorites to watch.

Like you said you weren't watching it for the old movie but for the commentary from the people watching it in the Mystery Science Theater.  The mockery and jokes were by far what made the show a hit!

I've enjoyed all the suggestions you have mentioned as far as shows and movies are concerned, well all except Dr Who.lol

    Cheers,

  • What does everyone think of Star Trek? I enjoyed it as a child, but it grew out long before I was an adult. How about Babylon 5? That was a rather good series. It too took forever to really get into, but if you gave it the time to develop, it would become a truly great science fiction series.

Here is the short version of Babylon 5. Take Star Trek and remove all shields, phasers, and all the unexplainable nonsense. Now add in real scientific ideas like relative velocity and trajectory and even gravity.

Battles between two forces were usually between massive ships and waves of tiny fighters. Projectiles were just that. No beam weapons were common. FTL travel was attained by using a different dimension. Outside of that dimension, FTL was impossible in every way. And entry to or exiting from that dimension required the use of a massive gate or a ship big enough to "jump" on its own.

Humans are a fledgling race, and are only alive by some mysterious nonsense that will be explained later in the series. As will be the reason that Humans are barely alive.

But aliens are many, and most have no interest in Humans at all.

It is a good series if you have not watched it. Great if you hate the impossible pseudo science spewed by everyone in every episode of Star Trek.
  • @OmniNegro

I have watched most StarTrek in my day, however I always tended to lose interest quicker then other series.

I have not seen Babylon 5, although the way you paint it makes me think that if I give it a chance I may just enjoy it !

Although I did watch all the new ones I agree the older shows were much more enjoyable, however the updated CGI in the newer movies was a nice change.

    Cheers,
    Jason M
  • @TinyTRex
Be warned that most of Babylon 5 is like watching politicians argue. Everyone has a goal, and every goal seems to go against the goals of everyone else in most cases.

The special effects were at times pretty bad. But credit to them for having aliens that did not always look like a Human with their skin painted a different color or fake ear extensions. Some actually had insectoid bodies. Not many, but a few, and Star Trek never seemed to bother.

    @UBob
I think I saw something one day about some supposed "expert" on the Star Trek series. There was apparently exactly one single toilet on the ship. But they did have teleporters, so use your imagination. :D
  • Farscape. Anyone?

That too was a good science fiction series. Like all science fiction, it was equal parts fantasy and pseudo science. But it was good. Most of the special effects were done well. Hell, even one of the main characters was a puppet, and that is hard to pull off and manage to be taken seriously.

The part that annoyed me the most about this one was the intro sequence. Having to listen to the same stupid line every single episode made me take the time to measure exactly how long it was down to the second so I could skip it as soon as it started.

What I liked most in this series was the fact that everyone had their own goals and really did not care for the rest. (With one exception, perhaps two.) People did what they wanted to, and would not generally care if it killed everyone else. But they were not innately evil, they were just selfish and shortsighted.

This is a rare type of science fiction series that you can determine if you will like or not by watching a few episodes. While many such series require a season or two to just begin telling the story, this one was doing continual, yet subtle character and plot development.
  • The Matrix for me.
  • The Matrix was a good film. The sequels to it were cash grabs with little in the way of value unless you felt the original was too short.

What does everyone think of Mr Robot?
  • sci fi is nothing compared to gore and horror. I like seeing body parts and dead bodies

Mr. Robot was a very intriguing show to me...a little bit of a mind f### at times but always found it fascinating...glad there's a season 2...Ubob would love it as it's about all the things he rants about on here lol
  • Mr Robot had aspects of severe mental illness mixed with lots of pseudo science. I can overlook the ignorance of all aspects of real science for a good show, and that it was. I too am looking forward to season 2.

So what other shows and films am I forgetting that need a good mention?
  • The Outer Limits? The Twilight Zone? Anyone love these? I sure do.

Absolutely. Love them both. The Twilight Zone is available for streaming on Netflix. Outer Limits is available on Netflix DVD-by-mail. It's one of the things I really like about Netflix is being able to get all my old favorites and introduce my kids to them.

Yeah, they could automatically teleport it right out of your body so you never have to do anything as manual as go to the toilet.

For me I only like the old Star Wars. I think Jaja Binks or whatever its name was spoilt it for me and the acting in the new films is incredibly bland and lacking in the areas that made the originals memorable.

The Matrix the first movie. The others did nothing for me.

But my favourites are the oldies like Terminator, The Abyss, even Flight of the Navigator. They had spirit which a lot of modern films just don't have for me.

Even Flash Gordon which is a bit psychedelic and camp for my tastes but had it's own unique charm.

Like Star Wars the recent Star Trek movies for me are god damn awful. Killing off key elements of the original story that cannot be replaced in an attempt to evolve the plot for me completely failed and the movies have too many plot errors that keep snapping me out of the moment.

Could go on, there are many more. Of course Alien, Aliens, Predator etc. Their recent incarnations range from pale to trash in comparison. Tending towards Bad Taste quality.

    Farscape. Anyone?
Yes I remember that one and the wacky singing in the intro. My dad had a thing for the peacekeeper girl, or whatever she was. I thought the ending was as close to wrapping it up without disappointing as I guess is possible.

It reminds me of another weird scifi series called Lex or something similar about an undead assassin, a sex slave and a floating robot head all flying in a huge dragonfly lol
  • Great idea for a discussion. I lean towards what I consider cerebral such as Forbidden Planet, Inception, Matrix, and CHAPPiE. I liked many of the stories on DS9 and Next Gen; I happened to watch a 1996 DS9 episode yesterday that discussed bio-quantum mechanics; I study QM. Star Wars is okay, but I prefer John Carter of Mars. I also liked Fire Fly and Babylon 5.
