Help on Setup a VPN on my PS4

Hey guys!

I have a huge problem and I will definately need your help now..

I'm living in a students house at campus.. therefore I bought a vpn from "privateinternetaccess" as my normal campus connection is a little bit restriced in regards to online gaming ... now I would like to setup my ps4 with this vpn including my Imac..

I did the following:

1. Log on with VPN at my Imac and check at the main homepage of PIA if I am protected
2. Connecting my ps4 and my Imac with an crossover cable (just bought that today)
3. sharing my WLAN connection on my Imac through ethernet

but when I now try to setup the internet connecction on my ps4, it says that he cant obtain an IP adress in a suitable time.. sometimes it works but then he says something with a DNS error..

In the PIA settings I'm connected with TCP and the 443 Remote Port

FYI: I am from Germany and I want to connect to Germany

What can I do? Please help me!

i hope you can help me.. please dont hesitate to ask me anything regarding this issue

  • Have you contacted PIA support about this? I'd be curious to see what they say.

Just to clarify, you say, "sharing my WLAN connection on my Imac through ethernet" I'm assuming by that you mean not just connecting an ethernet crossover cable but also enabling "Internet Sharing"?

Change your DNS settings in your OSX Network Prefs to:
    209.222.18.222
    209.222.18.218

That might fix the issue. If not your campus network may be blocking your DNS settings. If that's the case there may not be anything that can be done about it.

Thanks for your help.. its not working.. I already typed in that DNS settings on my Imac..

is there another way to try? or how can i definately prove that the dns is blocked?

I can't believe that it is working on my Imac but not on my ps4..
  • Are you able to connect through the PIA app on your Imac? It could be that PS4 wants to use some blocked ports. You could try testing this by pinging Sony servers IP from your Imac.

    https://ipleak.net/

DNS address should show up the same as your vpn ip address.
  • Thanks guys..

can you provide me a step by step tutorial how to do that? (Pinging Ports etc.)

Yes, I have a fully working PIA App on my Imac.. normally I can't access to chatroulette.. but after using the PIA App I am able to use it..

When I'm home later I will try your link!
  • So I have checked it and my DNS and my IP adress are the same.. that means it is not blocked? what is the next step? can you help me please?
  • Try this. Disconnect from PIA VPN and go to https://ipleak.net write down the IP address and the DNS address. Now connect to PIA VPN and go to https://ipleak.net again and write down the IP address and the DNS address.

The first IP and DNS you wrote down should be different from the second IP and DNS. If the second IP and DNS are different from the first ones you wrote down than everything is working fine and you're "protected".

Are you able to get on the internet with the PS4 when the PIA app is disconnected on your iMac? Are you sharing settings correct: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18704?locale=en_US

So I did what you said.. I booted my Imac and NOT connected to the VPN and went to the link you provided. Noted the IP and DNS.. there were two different adresses

    188.xxx.xx.xxx IP
    209.xxx.xx.xxx DNS (completely different numbers)

After that I connected to the VPN and did the same..

    178.xxx.xxx.xx IP
    178.xxx.xxx.xx DNS (completely same numbers)

my IP and DNS are the same number..
I just crossed out the rest of the numbers for safety

    1. so what does that mean? Is everything correct?

    2. yes, I can connect without the PIA App and with a shared connection from my Imac to my PS4 (but as usual with the normal connection through WiFi, the NAT detection fails here as well, as some ports are blocked from the campus)

    3. I actually did not tried the "thing" you provided me with the link to the other forum, as I want to wait until you answer 1.

Thanks a lot until here for your efforts
  • When I'm connected to PIA, IP and DNS address are the same at ipleak.net.

Next is the NAT setting with WaterRoof. I think you need to allow port forwarding in PIA app also.

According to Portforward site PS4 needs these ports:

    Application                      TCP Ports                                              UDP Ports
    PlayStation 4          80, 443, 1935, 3478-3480                         3478-3479

  • Did you follow the guide UltraHumanite posted earlier?

To enable port-forwarding in PIA client just check the box in advanced options.

Everything is fine the VPN appears to be working correctly on your iMac. The IP address and the DNS address being the same while you're connected to PIA VPN is a good thing.

WaterRoof/NAT is what you should try next. Read the two links I posted above, take into account what Osborne_Cox said about port forwarding.
  • Which DNS should I enter?
  • Use the PIA DNS 209.222.18.222 and 209.222.18.218 (although, it should be already set by the app) .

That guide is shit.. there is no button "create network" in my WiFi Network settings..

It's step 2 and not working.. the guide is from 2012 so probably thats the reason
