Do I need to configure uTorrent before starting to use it with VPN?

Hi all,

Sorry for the newbie question, I just got PIA today.  I'm a bit confused, with the Windows PIA VPN settings app, doesn't everything go through that now?   So theoretically what ever BT client I use (uTorrent included) would automatically go though the VPN and be safe right?  Why are some people also configuring Socks5 then?  It doesn't have encryption right and its not as good?  What should be the proper settings to get uTorrent to work with PIA then?  Is there a guide with pictures for dummies like me?

TIA.

  • If you want a simple guide, the best I can offer is to advise you to switch to qBittorrent and follow this simple guide I wrote two years ago.

If you insist on sticking with utorrent, that is your choice. Perhaps someone else can help you. I have not touched it in many years now.
  • Couple thing for utorrent itself...open utorrent...under options>preferences>bittorrent make sure enryption is set to forced, not enabled...and allow legacy connections is unchecked ....apply and save...then go to options>preferences>connection and uncheck all the port mapping and check randomize port each start and allow Windows firewall exception ...then set up your socks5 proxy ( recommended for reasons in my above post)...go to PIA homepage first, login, and create a username and password for the proxy...your regular username and password won't work...make sure proxy port is set to 1080...also make sure all 6 boxes below it are checked...apply and save...when you open a torrent in utorrent, a box opens up showing you the files in that torrent...in the lower left corner of the box is an advanced button...click it and you can delete all the trackers if you want ( they can be used to monitor you..probably not necessary with vpn but I err on the side of caution ) ..make sure DHT is enabled if you delete trackers...good luck

Awesome.  Thanks for all this info.
  • OK, one question is the test for Torrent Address detection available at https://ipleak.net/ accurate and reliable or not?

https://torguard.net/checkmytorrentipaddress.php here, just download this and keep it active in your client...works beautifully and you don't have to keep going to a website to check...gives you your torrent IP constantly
  • Thanks moshbeast, much appreciated.
  • I am trying to follow this instruction but somehow (I'me new to this) my VPN isn't able to connect?
I got as far as generating SOCKS username and pw and inputted that in the PIA VPN log in. But I must have checked/unchecked the wrong stuff on advanced setting? Could someone advise me?
    Thank you!
