Super confused about getting a private tracker to work

Folks,
If anybody has free time to help a non-net-admin, it would be appreciated!
I'm running Windows 10. I have PIA. I have qbittorrent. I joined a private tracker. I connected to PIA and used the private tracker site to find a torrent and I clicked and it worked.
So far, so good.
However, I can't upload much. I gather I need to set up "port forwarding" to be able to upload to keep a good ratio.
So I've been down a rabbit hole trying to figure out how to get that to work. I think I'm supposed to set up my computer to get the same IP address each time it connects, then set up port forwarding rules on the router according to the torrent client's help page, and that's it. I think that's what I did last time, anyway.
However, when I try to set up my laptop to have a certain IP by changing ipv4 properties on my wireless network connection in Windows, I just instantly lose internet access. I only get internet again if I switch back to "obtain an IP address automatically."
Any advice? Am I even looking at the right thing?

  • Actually, I use port forwarding without a single router or OS rule.  Remember, EVERYTHING comes and goes through the tunnel the VPN creates.  So, as long you're successfully connected to the VPN, your router and OS are configured properly.

Connect to a PIA server with port forwarding, note the port it assigns you, and enter it on the options/connections setup page in utorrent.  That's it.  In a way, the PIA app circumvents the firewall.  This is why it's important that you trust PIA.

(This is all assuming you have the PIA app installed on the laptop and your router connects directly to your modem/internet)
