Noob question - Enabling the Listening Port on Proxy

Sorry to bother you all, but since I am new to all of this, and as I couldn't find any answers, is it possible to somehow enable the Listening Port on my torrent client (BitComet) while using only the PIA's Proxy (without the VPN)?

Excuse my noobness in advance :D

  • Using the proxy without the VPN means running without any encryption other than the optional encryption in the torrent client. If you do not have that forced, then many of your connections will have no encryption. And even if you have it forced, it uses RC4 as the cipher, and can be cracked in a few minutes on a cheap laptop.

So while you can use the proxy without the VPN, I suggest very strongly that you use the VPN anyway. And if not, then I suggest you hire an attorney for the infringement suites you will surely face if you torrent anything you cannot prove to own.

The only thing I download via torrents is Linux distributions that are fully free to share, own, and use in any way you want. And I get fake infringement claims regularly when I grab a new distribution. There is money to be made in suing people, and they do not care to see if they even own the content before threatening you over it.
  • Thanks for the response. I am well aware of the risks when using the only the proxy, but I just wanted to know if it is possible to enable the listening port while using the PIA's proxy?
  • It is possible to run the VPN without encryption. (Or was in the past at least) So it should be possible to run the VPN client to get a port forwarded for your use.
  • When I set up the proxy on my torrent client (whether I'm using the VPN or not) the IP address it checks for the listening port is the proxy's IP (and not the VPN/ISP IP), so it would not be of much help.

That's why I asked if there is any option to enable the listening port directly on the proxy?
  • Sorry. As far as I know this is not possible.
  • Ok. Thanks.

I was also wondering would it be possible to add some sort of "translation" for port forwarding to the PIA client, that would translate the port we are given when we connect to a server to some predetermined port?
  • Again, not that I know of.
  • Is there some place where we could post such a request?

It shouldn't be too hard to implement such a feature to PIA's client.
