Deluge with proxy - still received copyright notice

I've been happily using the PIA proxy (and not the VPN) with deluge for the past few months, and just this past week my ISP received a surpise copyright claim.

I've tested to see if my proxy is working using:

...and they all successfully list my ip as somewhere hundreds of miles away.

I feel like I must have something misconfigured if this claim got through.

Here are my deluge settings: http://imgur.com/a/Dt5ow (using Win7 64-bit, by the way)

Here's the claim info.  I don't know if the IP address of "null" is particularly relevent.

yea, first off, the proxy server does not encrypt anything (which I'm sure you probably know)....although it gives you a different IP, you can see exactly what your downloading...second, if the proxy server goes offline for any reason, for example, utorrent will NOT function... is deluge like that?  if not, it may just have kicked you back to your regular ISP, and hence you got the notice...I cannot stress enough..use the VPN and the proxy together (daisy chain).that way the VPN encrypts everything and should it disconnect, the proxy serves as a backup only to cloak your IP...I would tell you to use the killswitch, but it was killing my download speeds so I had to disable it...you might want to give it a try
  • You may be right and doing both is the only way.

I connected to California and then again in Texas, and find I'm getting EXTREMELY slow torrenting speeds. Sometimes it will speed up to what I would consider a baseline, but for the most part it's down to 30 kb/s.
  • tip for ya...works for me every time...if you switch servers or locations with the VPN, I know utorrent stops downloading properly almost every time (speeds die, why I don't know)...what I do is I go into my torrent client and change to a different port...usually speeds kick up within a minute or two...don't know why this works for me but almost every time I disconnect/reconnect I have to do this to get utorrent to work properly...worth keeping in mind

  • I'm afraid I'm having no such luck.  Regardless where I connect to, it'll occasionally spike to 1 mb/s for ten seconds, then drop back down to the 30 kb/s range.

My web speeds are suffering as well.

At my current configuration, using both the proxy and VPN together is rendering torrenting unusable, which was my whole purpose for signing up.  I'm tempted to switch to torguard, but I don't have confidence that this isn't just something on my mind.
  • Registered here to try and help too because I've successfully tweaked a bunch of settings and got it exactly how I like it in getting both utorrent + vpn working together nicely.

I'll try and keep it short though.
Settings for PIA client (for windows)
    -Connection Settings
Connection type - tcp (much more reliable and stable in my case).  Remote port - auto.  Local port off, port forwarding off.  VPN Kill Switch (you should have this on if you want internet to basically cut off if it disconnects, it does work well but in my case I prefer it off to simplify the switch in disconnecting vpn and establishing connection with local isp as it does have to play with some system settings).  DNS Leak Protection - very important to turn on, and also IPv6 Leak Protection.
Region on Auto and still with regional or auto if manually connecting. I also have Start application at logon and auto-connect unticked as I prefer to manually connect and will leave it overnight at times (at which point I'll Enable VPN Kill Switch).
~Encryption stick with AES-128, SHA1, RSA-2048 (anything stronger and connection speeds to suffer noticeably, so default is good enough).

    UTorrent settings
-Connection, make sure UPNP and NAT-PMP are disabled (unticked) and that randomize (I imagine static ports are a method for tracking companies in identifying) and firewall are ticked.  Then Proxy default settings on Socks5 and everything checked afterwards.
-Bandwidth, it's important to have some sort of upload rate or else you struggle getting downloading, so, my max upload rate is 75, global dloading rate is 0, Rate limit to transport overhead - untick, rate limit to uTP - tick, stop transfers on user interaction - untick.
-Very important here, Number of Connections, having very different values can totally affect your consistent day to day speeds so try to stick around these values.  Global max number of connections - 60, Max number of connected peers per torrent - 25, upload slots per torrent - 1 (or higher if u want).  This is crucial because Proxying and VPN will obviously get really bogged down when there's hundreds of connections so it's noticeably allowed me to use proxy and VPN as long as there's a few seeders available (that support proxy too).
    -BitTorrent
All ticked except 'enable bandwidth management [uTP]' + 'limit local peer bandwidth'.  Now I know UDP tracker support won't work because we're using tcp but whatever, also you'll see people suggest unticking dht but it's fine and more reliable for speeds at cost of some risk.
Protocol Encryption, ideally Forced and unchecking allowing incoming legacy connections but I've taken risk of putting it on Enabled and allowing incoming (reason is because I'm using older utorrent version 3.4.2 because of the new crap on their latest version, so figure others will do likewise)

Otherwise, I've actually been very satisfied with stable speeds at 3-4 MB/s that may go up or down from time to time depending on seeders and times but keep in mind many people set their utorrent on a schedule so it may get available at times.  Also I know everyone loves magnet links but if using vpn and the right 'privacy' extensions etc... and importantly https://, downloading the torrent itself will help boost speeds and get it started faster.  Just make sure you delete it after adding it to utorrent and also emptying the .torrent folder (2nd last in Directories)

*Surprisingly I'm still using an IPFilter too which people have rarely talked about (used to be called Peerblock or PeerGuardian).  basically Download and install the IPFilter Updater here (this one is regularly updated) https://davidmoore.github.io/ipfilter/ and in advanced settings in Utorrent search for ipfilter and enable it so it says true.

Even though you do have the ipv6 leak protection in PIA VPN, you should still uncheck ipv6 from your network adapter (VPN TAP and Wireless/Wired ones).  Also importantly make sure you're using only Wired or Wireless, if both, then VPN might not help you and you should disable the secondary.

Sites I like to use to double check settings are
https://ipleak.net/   (their torrent address detection didn't work for me though).
Torguard's https://torguard.net/checkmytorrentipaddress.php is great, just download it once and leave it in there all the time, checking for tracker tab ip address all the time.
Also important, on your router make sure not to use the default DNS (your ISP's) because they simply lookup ip's when you request any website, so can see websites preceding starting any torrent, magnet etc... if they're not encrypted especially, etc... I use google dns with no problems on the router It's just 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, easy to remember.
In general try to avoid seeding and you should be fine and have great speeds.
    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks so much for that MPoE, though I followed your settings and transfer rates dived. I'm using Tixati and on the Proxy settings When select SOCKS5 it asks Address Port Login Password. I can use the Login Password from Client Support page for SOCKS, but what address and port?
  • For Socks5 proxy I use proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com Port: 1080  I hope this is what your looking for.
  • Yup, as Madtiger said,
    Proxy:
    proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com
    Port: 1080

If speeds took a heavy dive then I recommend waiting a few minutes to see if they get better and if not, adjust # of active downloads (Down to even like 3 or 4) and also the 'Number of Connections', trying higher or lower.
In general though more security means slower speeds usually. Especially if you're comparing to having a dedicated port with port forwarding vs VPN + Proxy.  My speeds are at least fast enough for when I leave it overnight to run that I'll have like 15 of 20 completed, my issue though lately is more rare torrents with fewer seeders or seeders that don't do proxy connections.  Every now and then a specific vpn location cuts out or has intermittently fast speeds so you could just wait it out or switch manually.  Right now my connection is going up to 3MB/s (Megabytes not bits) but then down to 50 kB/s and then back up seconds later, without disconnecting the VPN, So manually picking another close region fixed that to a stable 2.5 MB/s.  Doesn't usually occur but sometimes it can.

On a different topic but there really is a time-sensitivity with 'freshness of a torrent' and unfortunately you'll find years after downloading a nice copy of something the most popular current version being awful quality comparatively.    Depends on the content though.  It's 'Health' can definitely hurt speeds.
  • Thanks for your time. Still not working in tixati.
This forum wont let me paste a screenshot!
there are a couple checkboxes that say 'Use proxy to resolve names' and 'Use SSL to connect to proxy'. And then directions to turn off DHT and Diable UDP.
Anyway, can load all settings except "turn of DHT". Then nothing.
I read http://www.best-bittorrent-vpn.com/how-to-use-tixati-anonymously.html and followed instructions though didn't get the info from checkmytorrentip other than connecting from (no listing of date, ip, client).
Just giving this info-feedback for those looking for info.

  • fundogmo,
Home Box Office, Inc. is very anal about their content no surprise here my best suggestion stay off public sites and get you a private tracker with SSL, also DHT being turned off would be a good idea too.
  • Is using a VPN better then a proxy? for sure but I can tell you with DHT off and using a proxy I've never experienced the above since DHT imo leaks your real IP good luck. :)
  • Update: I've been very satisfied with my same setup I outlined months ago.  Only thing I need to do every once in a while is stop all torrents and start them again if it doesn't pick up anything after a while.  My setup has also improved reliability when dropping back to PIA VPN client 64 (65 was awful and kept dropping for me) in addition to getting a new cable modem.  I'm about to try out version 66.

HBO is very anal but for good reason, their shows are excellent so I do recommend anyone that wants to watch their content to subscribe to their $15 monthly plans, even if it's just for a month or two of the year where you can binge watch.

MrDeedz, Sorry I haven't seen your post until now but I'd say VPN + Proxy > VPN > Proxy > Nothing.  I've actually set up a proxy for a relative cause it's so reliable and easy to do but do plan on adding vpn as well.
