Public IP not Masked when connected to VPN

Hi,

I have reported this to PIA in a ticket but I am impatient and wanted to ask here for advice. This issue has started recently and I have not made any changes to my configuration in windows or the PIA application-it just started happening. Windows updates have been turned off for months now and the issue happens with or without winblows firewall on or off.

Some info on my issue: Running Winblows 7

When connected to VPN while running winblows I got to MYIP.com webpage or the PIA homepage and my public IP is displayed-yes this is while I am connected to the VPN.

-I have already disabled WebRTC and when I test it at a webrtc website my IP is not displayed-at the same time in a new tab my public IP IS displayed on the PIA homepage or myip.com.

When I connect to a VPN using android or linux the public IP is hidden and only the VPN server's IP is displayed when going to the PIA home page or myip.com

I have tried completely uninstalling ALL VPN related software=PIA app and openvpn and tap adapters. Then shutdown PC for over 30 minutes while I did something else. Then booting up windows and reinstalling from a freshly downloaded copy of the PIA installer.

I gotta say I am stumped. Unless the PIA VPN app is flawed I have no clue what to try next. Am open to any suggestions?

Thanks,

  • oh, one more thing-the issue is not restricted to my own PC. I have tried my own PC, my laptop, my wife's PC and a friends PC at his house not mine. All running windows 7 and all experiencing the same issue with the public IP not being masked while connected to the PIA VPN.

What I have not tried is using anther VPN provider to see if this is related to PIA only or ALL VPN's

Thats my next step if PIA cannot resolve this soon.

    Thanks.

http://www.trimium.com/ try this...takes about one minute to set up..I know it works and if it doesn't change your public IP something else is wrong

  • Well,

Isn't that interesting. It worked fine. My public IP is masked using Trillium. I have to get this over to my ticket. Thank you.

Any other ideas on what COULD be the issue when connecting to the PIA VPN?

    Thanks again.
  • Update.

PIA resolved this issue with steps they asked me to take VIA email combined with my own steps. granted I did not tell them I was running my own dns server, it completely skipped my mind until I started trying to follow PIA's instructions and set my nic to dynamic and then that lead down to a bunch of other issues. The "fix" was to completely uninstall all adapters, the dns server and all VPN related software from both PIA and open-vpn shut down (left it that way for 2 minutes). Start her up, reinstall all non-VPN related adapters, let them get IP and verify connectivity. THEN install PIA software (beta-sent to me by support--looks nice works well!!) and verify connectivity and that my public IP was masked (it is:-) and as a bonus the original issue of the port forwarding port not showing in the tool-tip is also fixed:-).

The afetr ensuring my network is working, and the vpn is working as it should, I reinstalled my dns and enter my settings and it is also working.

The issue was I was never being assigned an IP from the PIA servers - the internal IP, not the external...so whenever I did IP config /all I saw 169.254.xxx.xxx on the tap adapter, even though I saw the PIA external IP in the system tray as being connected. Now all is well, the tap adapter is being assigned it's internal IP, and I am using all PIA settings (including DNS) while connected to the PIA VPN service.

    Just as I should be.

    Life is now wonderful again.

    Cheers
