When should one use DNS Leak Protection?
The client support page says "This ensures that DNS requests are routed through the VPN". As opposed to where? Where else would they go? PIA has its own DNS servers so what's the difference between connecting to a site with DNS Leak Protection enabled and disabled? Either way it's anonymous so what's the difference?

That depends on what software you use. If you ever let your ISP force you to install any type of software, then you are almost certainly compromised. Likewise, most firewalls and antiviral software has debatable benefits that can be exploits just as easily as defenses.
In fact, any time you install software that asks if you want to install some other software to provide some mysterious benefit, the odds are it is a bait and switch of some sort.
A good example is Adobe Flash. It asks if you want to download and install two different things. I never once tried them, but I am certain they are not beneficial.
The only way to see if your DNS is compromised is to try changing it to something else, then see if the change persists. If not, then you have been screwed over by something. This is a surprisingly common problem.
