qbittorrent stalling and proxy question

Running qbittorrent in a Virtualbox it works fine when I first launch it and shows 300+ nodes and the torrent I'm downloading shows 4.99 availabilty (it's actually showing around 11 now), one of the three trackers is Working with 200 peers. However, when I come back after a while I find that it's stalled, there are no peers connected anymore, the tracker shows as Not Working (still with 200 peers though) and availability has dropped to below 1.

I thought perhaps my ISP might be throttling me, so I setup the Socks5 proxy settings but in the log it shows

16/06/2016 14:40 - qBittorrent failed listening on interface 0.0.0.0 port: SOCKS5/8999. Reason: Access is denied.

I don't understand this error, as I've set it to use proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com port 1080. I've ticked "Use proxy for client connections" and "Disable connections not supported by proxies" and "Authentication" and entered my proxy login credentials as shown on the Control Panel page on PIA's website.

I've set qbittorrent to only use the VPN adapter under Advanced and the log shows that it's listening on 10.x.x.x, which is the VPN adapter IP. The VPN IP is 46.x.x.x and the log also shows "16/06/2016 14:40 - External IP: 109.x.x.x", but I don't know where that's coming from, which is a bit worrying.

Comments

  • Anyone able to explain the messages I've flagged in the log?
  • 0.0.0.0 is not a valid IP range at all. qBittorrent is telling you it failed to connect. Why is a question of network and settings. But so long as you are using the VPN it will not matter. 10.x.x.x means local network, and thus it is secure through OpenVPN.
  • You didn't mention so I must ask...did you create a separate username and password for the socks5 proxy?...cause your login ones don't work for it...you have to login to their site to create new ones for the proxy if you haven't done so
  • Good point. Here is the link you need.
    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/

Go there and login to generate your Socks5/PPTP/L2TP login and passphrase.
  • Just as a note on the log, 0.0.0.0 here just refers to how it's listening on all IP addresses it's able to, so that's not anything to worry about.

re SOCKS5, you'll want to either use the VPN (openvpn, pia app, pptp/l2tp) or the SOCKS proxy, not both at the same time

That's a strange error though, let us know if you work anything out with it.
  • I already had a Socks5 login and passphrase generated and entered in qbittorrent but I re-generated it just in case but I'm still getting the same error.

It might not matter as I'm using the VPN but there have been reports that using both helped other people and considering that I've been having problems with torrents stalling I'd like to try it, so I would like to sort this out.

I also still don't understand what the "External IP 109.x.x.x" is referring to.
  • Looking at it today, the PiA VPN icon in the systray shows the 109.x.x.x address but qbittorrent's log (v3.3.5) says the External IP is 46.x.x.x and doesn't mention the 109.x.x.x address anymore.

So if the VPN IP is 109.x.x.x, what's the 46.x.x.x address?
