did I get ransomwared by someone pretending to be PIA?

on my tablet tonight...all night long while I was online I keep getting a white screen popping up with the PIA logo saying update was available...finally after it popped up about 10-15 times an overlay appeared saying do you want to apply the update?...I hit apply and BOOM! a screen popped up saying it was the cyber police and wanted $200 to release my tablet...I cant get it off...cant factory reset, boot into safe mode ...nothing...fortunately it was a $20 POS tablet so I just ordered another one online but a lot of you own more expensive tablets and android devices so be warned!!

  • @privacytools.io SERIOUSLY!! I've been on for over a year trying to help people out and you post that smart a** retort?? get bent!!!!
  • The thing with ransomware is that by the time you are informed that you have it, it has had plenty of time to sit and work to encrypt all your files and such.

So I doubt it was related to the PIA update. Nonetheless I am sorry to hear this happened to you.
  • Hello Moshbeast,

We did push an update last week to our Android app, however I strongly suspect that the PIA app is not responsible for the randomware situation.

We're very sorry about the inconvenience and we would like to investigate your issue to determine what happened and where the ransomware came from (and potentially where it goes to).

I've raised this to our senior techs and they've asked could you please email [email protected] and mark your ticket 'FAO: Jayson Q' (our Senior Support Manager) as he is very interested in getting to the bottom of your issue.

    Regards.

  • I have multiple requests to whitelist my SMTP server.  No response so far.
The first request is dated June 3, 2017 and ticket numbered 363882..
Please respond Mr. Jason Q, or anyone, please.

Seeing you lack the intelligence and/or courtesy to open a new thread, I will give the benefit of doubt to PIA on this issue.
  • Thank you for the suggestion.
Yes a new thread is more appropriate, which I will open now.
I do not think you need to insult anyone to be helpful.
Bu that is not your point is it?

And how can you give PIA the benefit of doubt if, say, I am not courteous (apparently you think you are).  this is a clear non sequitur and possibly rage, hate and or disgust for someone you know nothing about.
The request is clear for anyone to understand, obviously it is not responded to, how can you suggest PIA may be right at the time in not responding to my earlier tickets because in the future I might be not courteous by not opening a new thread?
    Whatever!

    You are very welcome Sir!
My apologies but I did not see my insult.
My point is that you rude by hijacking the thread.
Your request wasn't answered because you asked inappropriately.

    I hope this helps!

    Apology accepted.
To help you see your insult, your offending message basically suggests "I am an idiot and / or rude therefore possibly in the wrong."  You may also see the non sequitur in there.
Your explanation "Your request wasn't answered because you asked inappropriately" contains a misjudgement too.  I clearly refer to a ticket number and a date.
Opening support tickets are the most appropriate way to ask for support.  I was forced to write to forums because the tickets were not responded to!
But the thank you part still remains as you are right about opening a new thread, as opposed to hijacking an existing one, which eluded me at the time, because I read another thread before this about tickets not being responded to and everybody kept adding "mine too" with their ticket numbers, a faulty manner which I duplicated.
Thus once again thank you for helping me get to the right way of doing this, and once again, you do not need to insult first to help others.

I hope you see it now.
