How to check if I am really secure!!! I am SCARED!!!

I am torrenting through the VPN using the official PIA client. I have checked my IP address using various IP checker sites and it is the VPN IP. I have tested my DNS leak and I am secure there also. I have found some sites that I used to check torrent IP by adding a torrent file and it definitely shows the VPN IP.

I am just scared if it is really working or not, because the torrent I download works at fast speeds that a torrent on normal connection for me would work. That is what is scaring me, I thought I would have seen a speed dip but I don't.

  • Same thing happening to me here, except I don't use torrent it's just general download speeds.

It's as fast with the VPN than it is without.
I can do online gaming without any issue at all!!!

This is new from a few weeks ago, which makes this even more wierd...

Got another thread about that on General VPN Support and I still don't know what has happen to my setup...

yer fine...if all your test are showing the VPN IP, you are in good shape...my tablet gets better speeds with the VPN on than it does off so that can be normal..can depend on the server you're using also...do yourself a favor..go to the PIA main page, log in and create a username and password fro the socks5 proxy they offer..enable it in your torrent client ( instructions for adding a socks5 proxy to any torrent client are online )..that way if for some reason the VPN would fail or disconnect. the proxy will continue to mask your IP...good luck

Yeah, Found the proxy instruction I will add that also. Thanks for the Assurance that I am fine.
  • Hello Star_Fox,

You are able to check the status of your connection by going to our website: www.privateinternetaccess.com

It will either say "You are protected" or "You are not protected" in the top left hand side of the screen.

If you need any further assistance, please contact us at [email protected] and we will be happy to help!

    Thanks,
  • Poisonous,

it would be great to, not only see that we are protected (connected through your VPN servers), but also what encryption we are using.

The whole reason threads like this exist is because we know we are connected to your VPN's, but we're not sure if it's encrypted and why we get max speeds (encryption should slow down transfer speeds).
  •    Thank you the list of testing pages. Mine is good on all counts. Where is wasn't when I first started testing. I had some dns leaks at the other end of the tunnel. Good now though. Thank you again...
  • There is a really good Windows Firewall application call WFC (Windows Firewall Control) by binisoft.

It's great working with Windows Firewall on Win7 - Win10 and with this you can block certain programs (ie torrent client) from communication over your LAN IP but allow over the Public VPN.

Also if you use VUZE for your torrents, you can also physically lock the VUZE to only communicate on a certain network interface, so for me that interface is the VPN.
This means my PC Firewall prevents Vuse working on the LAN and also VUZE refuces to work on the LAN as well so if the VPN goes down nothing goes out on the LAN.

In your torrent client, there are several torrents(search for check torrent IP) you can check to check your IP address. Also firstly I always download a very large Linux Torrent which is in the public domain and I check my ip address with this as a final check, then pause the linux torrent and then go normal torrenting and on my next session I just resume the linux torrent abd check the IP and then pause etc etc
  • The one thing I don't see mentioned too often is the use of the 'Kill Switch'.  I have had issues with PIA just dropping-out for which I do not know the cause. Even if I were to be sitting right here at the computer I will not be able to keep my eye on the little green 'PIA DUDE' in my tray.  When actively downloading I ALWAYS use the 'Kill Switch' because it simply severs my internet connection IMMEDIATELY should I lose PIA coverage.  I always get a warning when I put on the PIA which I was going to check to see exactly what it said but now with this new update I have just discovered I can not access my settings while I have my service connected.  This was not the case prior to the new update.  What gives PIA!???????

I'll look into that firewall control. I just went through a vpn crash and the kill switch got stuck. I was testing my torrent client downloading Free linux distros. when it happened. They came in nicely but I couldn't seed. Had to reinstall the vpn client and reinstall the TAP driver. Works now but I'm a bit leary my new torrent client. I used to use Azureus before it became Vuze. I went to utorrent after that. Now gonna' try this Qbitorrent.  As my favorite version of utorrent is exactly the same as the one that caused an OP of another thread quite a lot of trouble...
