why internet dont work when disconnected from router

I am getting a starnge behaviour with my internet connection.
My internet works fine when  i connect the cable to my wifi router. But during the power cut ,
as the router can not work , i just disconnect the lan cable and plug inot my laptop directly .
I But when i dial inot create a connection , it just says userid password dont match .
I ma typping the correct pusername and password. using these credential i ma able to  log on
to the my service provider  web pageand check my account details as well.

why is this happening ?
