Which option do i connect with?

complete VPN noob here, so pls forgive the ignorance.

i just signed up & installed the Mac app. entered my usr/pwd. when i now go to the menu icon to connect, there's a long list of locations to choose from.
how do i pick the best one?

also,
i've read elsewhere that you have to make sure a VPN provider's software actually does setup your system correctly, but didn't say how. upon searching & further reading, i found a few places that give instructions that involve going in to my System Preferences > Network & adding a new option w/ "PPTP | L2TP/IPSec" settings(?). i don't know what that means, but when i do go in to my Network settings, there is nothing new there from PIA. should there be?

lastly,
i read in the PIA support area where it tells how to change the DNS of my system (also in System Prefs > Network), but does not explain why nor if it's important to or not.
i'm not going to be leaving PIA connected/on 24/7, only when i torrent or use a public wifi. so should i change my DNS numbers to something besides Comcasts?

thanks!!!

  • PPTP and L2TP are outdated services aimed at older devices not capable of using OpenVPN. The PIA client is based on OpenVPN.

    Hi SyberKnight,

For the gateway you should connect to, it's really up to you! Gateways that are closer to you will generally have better speeds, as they have a short distance to travel, but there are exceptions to every rule (Gateways close to you could be seeing server congestion and end up being slower than one further away).

Regarding your other two questions, the PIA app should handle all of this for you. PPTP/L2TP are alternate connection mechanisms and not required if you're using the app, and the PIA App will set our DNS servers when connected to the VPN connection. If desired, you can also change your DNS servers to use ours all the time. Changing them from Comcast's will help stop them from being able to track the sites you visit.

    Thanks,
