EXTREMELY SLOW TORRENTS

So I am originally a Linux user and swapped to Windows for gaming and work requires a PC with Windows... I am having a lot of trouble so when not connected to the VPN my speed is around 360 mbps when connected it drops to 280ish which is ok I am fine with that. I can even game on it. But when I connect to the VPN to use Torrents my download speed is around 2kbps. So a 80gig file is going to take a bit.. I have port forwarded I also swapped ports and changed encryption to Blowfish non of those seem to fix it. I am using transmission as my p2p client and the default PIA app anyone have any ideas?

  • Try vanilla OpenVPN? It may not fix it, but it is worth a try. And certainly switch to qBittorrent and follow this simple guide to restrict it to the VPN adapter only.

So I did all of that trying it but I keep getting this in my log
Sun Aug 14 02:38:39 2016 Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: bad packet ID (may be a replay): [ #9999999 ] -- see the man page entry for --no-replay and --replay-window for more info or silence this warning with --mute-replay-warnings

Still pretty slow I am getting 1mbps now better than the 4-200 kbps I was getting before

  • Replays are most often a type of attack. The torrent you were trying to download was being patrolled by some assholes who were trying to break your connection by tricking your torrent client into thinking an old packet was a new one. (Generally for a timing attack.) But luckily your torrent client noticed and was not fooled.

I suggest avoiding that content. Whatever it was, there is a torrent out there where they are not doing that shit. Seek it out.

Seems to be all torrents and happens when not downloading or seeding torrents as well... Can that have an effect on performance?

  • Well, once the IP was added to the list the content trolls attack, the effect of them trying this attack may persist for a long time. I suggest disconnecting from the VPN and reconnecting to a different node to see if it persists. If it does, then they have a way to track you, or the node you connected to was also being attacked.

Replays do most certainly effect performance. And that is half the reason they are using this attack.

You disabled Teredo and all the other IPv6 pseudo interfaces already? (And yes, there are three different IPv6 pseudo interfaces Windows ships with, and you have to disable them each manually, no other way actually works.)

Here is a quote of a post I made back in 2014. It only works on Windows 7, but if you search for the keywords, I bet you can find detailed instructions for any version of Windows, and any version of Linux/Unix.

Here is a direct quote from that post.

Kill off all fake interfaces for IPv6. Here is the easy way. Open an administrative command prompt and type these three commands.
    "netsh interface ipv6 6to4 set state state=disabled undoonstop=disabled"

"netsh interface teredo set state disabled"

"netsh interface ipv6 isatap set state state=disabled"

Reboot and they no-longer exist. It makes for a much shorter list of interfaces to wade through.
  • I get quite a drop on my connection.
I am on a 40Mbps Down/10Mbps Up Home Fibre connection

If I connect to Netherlands and do a speed test at speedtest.net I get 5Mbps Down/9Mbps Up

If I then load up Vuze and start my test torrent (Linux Mint) I get 1Mbps average with a max of around 1.3Mbps. No matter what other torrents I try I also was get the same even though Vuze is configured for highspeed

A year ago I could get 20Mbps Down/10Mbps on the Netherlands but many more people have come onto the VPN these days so speeds are dropping.
