macOS Sierra 10.12 GM Seed - DNS Issue

Using the latest PIA client v63, it seems you need to specify explicitly DNS servers in the GM Release of macOS Sierra. Is this being worked on?

I'm running the GM Release and have my mac's DNS set to PIA's. When using PIA Safari doesn't work, the tool tip doesn't give a forwarding port, the Google Drive and DropBox toolbar icons are greyed out and say they can't connect and SMB shares from my FreeNAS server stop working.

I'm using CA Toronto, UDP, auto Remote port, PIA MACE, and IPv6 leak protection.

  • I'm running Sierra GM release and could not connect to the internet via PIA until I set my DSN records in Network. Go to System Preferences, Network, Advanced, DNS, and add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to your DNS servers.
  • This is a weird issue. I have Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) added in my router so they are assigned by DHCP to all devices connected on my network. The PIA client will show as connected, but I am unable to browse any websites in Safari. After I enter the Google DNS servers manually in the network settings of MacOS Sierra, it now connects to PIA and browses the Internet without issue.

  • Thanks to you guys ,   I added the DNS info and now can browse with Safari .   I spent hours back and forth with so-called Tech Support at PIA and they couldn't help me .  I imagine that less patient customers must be going to another VPN source rather than put up with this kind of frustration.   Adding to the PIA frustration,  was the issue of the many difficulties entailed in reverting back from Sierra to  El Capitan .    Thanks to the forum !!

    Hi,

On MacOs Sierra GM RC (16A320)
    Use DNS servers:
    209.222.18.222
    209.222.18.222
    (PIA servers)
    (WIFI parameters/advanced/DNS/+)
Works perfectly and you'll have a secure connexion.
    best regards
    ;)

  • I believe the underlying cause is OS X Sierra not supporting PPTP.

I have not had time to determine whether PIA can be used with L2TP/IPSec; does anyone here have more info? Thanks
  • @exxtreem, I think you're running into a different issue. The issue I was reporting was simply related to DNS. If you explicitly put DNS Servers in your Mac network settings then PIA (v63) works. If you rely on DHCP to setup your DNS, then it doesn't work.

Anyone from PIA have an update on this? Will it be fixed soon?

  • Hi simonf00,

While we can't support operating systems before their official release, I do know that our developers are looking into this issue. Thanks for all the feedback here everyone, it's been very helpful.

exxtreem: Our app uses OpenVPN rather than PPTP, so this shouldn't be an issue. We do support L2TP connections, but if you cannot get our app working with the manually-set DNS servers I'd recommend checking out our Tunnelblick setup for now.
  • I solved my connection issue by creating an L2TP connection as indicated in the PIA site. I actually like how it looks better than the app. It is important than when you get to the password info, you click first on the "generate password" link, as PIA will create a different password to connect.

  • As for MacOS Sierra GM version

Confirming the DNS server solution is perfect for now.

    > System Preferences > Network > Advanced (lower right) > DNS > DNS Servers

    209.222.18.222
    209.222.18.218

    Cheers

  • Hi,

It's not working on my side, didn't use PIA for a while and now that I'm on Sierra, nothing is working.

    Rgds;

    Hi Phil,

We have a new release out that should solve the issue. Can you please open this page to download the new version for me?

Once you've downloaded and installed this new version you should see it working correctly. If you continue to run into troubles with this new version however, please send us a message at [email protected] so our support team can work out exactly what's going on and help resolve this.
  • I can confirm that v64 fixes the DNS issue on macOS Sierra.
