  • Hi,

Sorry for the delays: it was the weekend for me over here.

If you use our app or OpenVPN to connect to PIA, you will be safe as there is no way for anyone to have any idea what is going in the link. The forum thread you linked is from someone using the SOCKS proxy, which is NOT encrypted. This is why that user got noticed, as their traffic was not encrypted in any way. Also, please note that while we allow torrents on our network, using our network for copyright infringement is against our terms of use and that we can terminate your account if we catch you on the act.

As for the speeds, this is very dependent on your latency. WiFi adds a considerable latency, so this is likely why you are noticing such slowdowns as you get further away from your router. The reason for this is that your operating system has to keep in memory every packet that it sends that has not been acknowledged by the other end yet, and at those speeds the buffer gets filled up really quickly so it has to wait for the data to be acknowledged. To maximize your performance, make sure you are using the closest server to you (to reduce latency), and as counter-intuitive as it sounds, connect to PIA using TCP. TCP uses a dynamic buffer that scales better at high speeds with higher latencies, which ends up giving a better throughput in the end.

I hope this answsers your questions!
