App icon vanished and cannot switch PIA off

My PIA icon at the top bar of my macbook pro 2015 has disappeared and now my IP seems to be permanently protected, however this is stopping me from accessing some domestic content in the UK. I tried to update the app and it says that PIA is already running, however I cannot see any evidence of this and there is no apparent way to shut the app down. Any ideas?

    Hello,

    This issue is often caused by leaving PIA running when your computer goes to sleep. Simply reboot your computer to resolve the issue.
