VPN Disconnects Whenever I Start Torrenting

edited October 2014 in P2P Support
Hello,

I recently signed up to PIA, and so far the web browsing seems to work just fine, however the connection drops everytime I try to use uTorrent. The torrent will actually start, with both u/l and d/l speed picking up, but after one minute or so it stops and the connection does not respond anymore (no torrent, no browsing, no ping, nothing). In the meantime, my regular "non-tunneled" connection still works fine.

Do you have any idea where this could come from? I'm using Windows 8.1, have tried disabling my firewall but it doesn't change anything.. And registerer for a free trial with another VPN company to see if it would work better, but oddly enough exactly the same thing happens..

Thanks for your help!

  • I have the exact same problem on one of my mac os x machines. i have two mac os x desktop  and one works fine when torrent. very frusterating

  • I've been having the same thing.  I'm thinking maybe my ISP was throttling/resetting me because of bandwidth usage, so I limited my torrent bandwidth to 100 kps and haven't had any drops yet.

While they supposedly can't tell you're torrenting, they can see if you're using a ton of bandwidth, and may throttle you at peak times.  I only ever have torrent connectivity issues during the daytime.
  • I'm experiencing the same thing.  If I wait a minute or so the connection comes back, so I'm not really sure what is going on.  This absolutely happens at ALL times of the day or night for me.  It's 4am now and it's going on.

A solution that has helped many (including myself) is to set your torrent client up to use the socks5 proxy.  I seems crazy, but running the proxy and the VPN client seems to help with this.

    That was my short-term solution.

Long term, I formatted my hardrive and reinstalled from scratch.  This has fixed 95% of the problem for me.  It will still happen occasionally (less than once a day), but it's usually back up in a matter of minutes and stays up. YMMV

edit: definitely give the proxy a try.  I would say reinstalling from scratch is a last resort

edit again:  today, I can't stay connected to a server if I'm torrenting.  It's as bad as it's ever been.  Just switched the proxy back on.
  • Yes, this is happening to me as well. Been doing lots of different testing over the last 48 hours and here is my summary.

Win 7 with OIA Win Client (v.38)
I had stronger encryption on (AES-256/SHA256/RSA-4096) but now reduced it to the default AES-128/SHA1/RSA-2048. (Not made any different when torrenting but has reduce my latency when playing BF3)
I connect to Netherlands and get a port of 21136

OK HTTP and HTTPS web browser traffic rock solid with no disconnections.

First I used uTorrent but have now tried Vuze to see it problems was client related or not.

Running a torrent client (first uTorrent and then Vuze) the connection is solid (when not downloading any files)

Load a torrent file into a torrent client and bang, on average every minute the connection would drop and then about 20 seconds later it would connect. ie From a bright green PIA Tray to a Dark Green PIA tray saying connecting and then back to bright green. At no point does it go red.
My VPM NetMon W7 does not register the VPN drop and it is checking every 500ms.
So is the connection dropping completely or is something else happening.

It take ages to download large torrent files with the connection going up/down every minute. As soon as I pause/stop the torrent downloan it the client the VPN become stable again, so it must be something about the torrent protocol as both torrent client exhibit the same dropping behaviour. See my PIA manger log file

  • Yep same thing here on Linux Mint 17 PIA App
  • I am getting disconnects too while running torrents with PIA VPN. Could it be the ISP dropping connection to PIA? Anyone using comcast?
  • I read in another thread someone suggested changing to UDP Auto.

    Worked for me
  • I'm also experiencing the same issue (Win 8.1, uTorrent). Does anyone have a solution?
  • Win 7 with OIA Win Client (v.38)

This is EXACTLY the same thing happening to me! It's been impossible to describe it on Google searches.

@Archer 's post seems to be a working solution. I've been testing now, and I don't seem to be having the same problem that I was having before. THANKS Archer
  • @Archer & @G3TG0T

How do I go about setting my UDP to auto? Probably a insanely noob question, but Ive looked for UDP in all of uTorrents options, and PIA's options. I googled it but didnt find anything, chances are Im just a huge noob, but this problem is making PIA worthless to me at the moment.
  • @Zea,
You will find UDP in your PIA application settings: connection type :-)

  • @VPNTester

Oh, appreciate it. And damn, my settings were already set to UDP/Auto... Guess Im still stuck with this issue for now.
  • I was having the same issue, but found a way to fix it (at least temporarily). It seems to be a problem with utorrent and the PIA app fighting over TCP/UDP. Here's what I did:

    - Updated to the latest ver of utorrent (3.4.2) *Note: after upgrading, utorrent kept freezing and crashing my PC until I completely uninstalled and reinstalled*.

    - Set PIA to TCP/Auto.

    - Disabled all UDP options in utorrent, for example, Options-Preferences-BitTorrent, and unchecking "Enable UDP bandwith management [udp]" and "Enable UDP tracker support".

Now my speeds are kinda all over the place, and I can only seem to get a few downloads going at most, but the connection has been stable so far.

  • That really sucks. UDP is a connectionless protocol. So it can send and receive data packets in any order without maintaining a connection. TCP is basically a shoddy protocol for many purposes, due in part to the need for packets to be sent in a specific order, and never accepting one until all before it arrive.

But if that is what works for you, then I am glad you found out. I just hope your case is more of an exception than the rule for everyone here.
  • those of you having trouble using just curious if you have uTP enabled in your torrent client?

I would disable that and restart.  While you're at it, disable local peer discovery too.  DHT and peer exchange are good.
  • Actually, I used have uTorrent disconnections and I fixed them for good.
    - I decided to stick with uTorrent 2.0.4
    - unchecked everything from BitTorrent Tab page EXCEPT: Enable UDP Tracker Support
    - adjusted Bandwitdh page with limits proper to my speed (less than maximum)

  • Has there been any updates? Ive tried everyones personal solutions to this issue, but Im still getting the same issue.
  • I think the real culprit is probably with weak NICs crapping out with all the connections that torrenting makes.
  • You need to LOWER the number of connections on the Bandwitdh uTorrent page
  • VPNTester, I make mine with 500 and it works fine.   The culprit isn't utorrent or PIA but something else.

Its something between the two... Or something else that is always used and is interacting with them, such as the OS... But this only happens when the VPN and utorrent is running. VPN runs great solo, as does uTorrent. When they both are on, the internet drops instantly, and stays down until I restart my computer.
  • Try to set your uTorrent to:
    Maximum connections: 450
    Peers per torrent: 50
    Uploads per torrent: 10

    VPN protocol: UDP

I had the same issue, but I ended up here. My internet was dying, and disconnecting from VPN and also quitting utorrent didn't fix the issue, but disabling the network card and re-enabling it re-started the connection without having to reset my computer every time.

I lowered my encryption settings to the default minimum (although haven't played around with it at all), and followed the settings here, and it worked. I have zone alarm pro, which is still active.
  • Rightnow I am running over 10 torrents over PIA, upwards of 5000 connections in my firewall. So if you guys are having problems, the cause is not the PIA servers.

How do I do it? A machine with 2 network cards running pfsense as my router and serving as a openVPN client to PIA.

I don't use the PIA vpn application but I suspect it might be the cause of this problem. After reading these posts it seems to be the only thing you guys have in common.
  • I was not having issues with my connection until just recently.  I can't figure out if my issues are related to PIA, or my router.  I can say that utorrent and Qbittorent were working fine even when running together.

Everything was working fine and then suddenly I'm getting drop outs after some time downloading.  I have determined that the timing of the dropouts are erratic and not consistent.

I can surf the web independently and not have issues.  I can play games on steam without issue.  The problems only seem to arise from torrenting.

I wish that Qbittorrent had a way of tracking speeds like utorrent does so that I could see when exactly my connection drops out.

I hate utorrent now and won't use that ad infested software.  I may go to an older version like most have, but it really has been a pain in the neck to unistall.  It's almost like malware the way it knows that the computer once had utorrent on it.

Hope we can get this thread up and running again.  Maybe it's not PIA but this is the closest thread I've found on the internet that describes my issues.
  • btw, my hardware is

    i5 4670K
    Asus Sabretooth MB
    Asus PCE N15

    Software:

    Qbittorent 3.1.9.2
    Win8.1
PIA latest version as of 2014-09-14
  • I just might've found something so maybe others can give it a try and see if it works for them.

    I'm
not sure what made me try this but I manually set my download folder in
the Qbittorrent options.  I decided to move all my downloads into a
separate folder on the same drive.  This should be a quick transfer as
long as it's done to a folder on the same drive even if you have a lot
    of data to be moved.

I then let qbittorrent re-create the missing
download folder that I had originally set up.  Things have been running
very smoothly for the last hour.  Normally I get drop outs in a much
    shorter time frame than that.

I do recall that I was moving a
bunch of folders around through qBittorrent so maybe something broke
along the way.  Of course this could also be a long shot.  I can't
really see the logical connection between folder directory and internet
breaking, but who knows.  Computers never cease to confound me even
though I'm fairly competent with tech.
  • Actually, scratch that.  Connection dropped after about an hour and a half.  This is so frustrating!
