Proxy server down - proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com

PIA, can you please provide an update as to why your proxy server is no longer working?

It's been down all day.

Comments

  • The region has been rebooted and seems to be back up now. We're monitoring the situation.
  • proxy comming back as different ip from vpn but not allowing me to connect to utorrent adn download please help
  • @p4680428: What do happens? Do you have any error message? Are the trackers loading fine but no peers are connecting? How many peers does that torrent have?

When using the proxy, it is important to keep in mind that port forwarding is not possible, so you can only connect to peers that accepts incoming connections. Many peers are in a similar situation where they can only do outgoing connections, so when you encounter peers like this you both cannot connect to eachother and thus can't download.
  • it switches from connection status unavailable to no incomming connections status does not show any peers or seeders even though there are thousands of both fromt he origin page. when i have just the vpn on there are no issues though. must be something in the settings or something i would think? the picture on the tutorila page does not load on what the configuration is so i can not check
  • Does the proxy work any better when used alone without PIA enabled globally at the same time? Which PIA region are you connected to? It should work anyway, but sometimes nesting a proxy inside a VPN can lead to some interesting things due to the multiple encapsulation layers. If it still doesn't work, I would suggest trying to remove all the proxy settings and then enter them back again, making sure the address, username and password are all correct.

All servers are up from here both with and without going through PIA first, so I don't see why it wouldn't work:

  • under dht it states it is waiting for announce, no idea what that means
  • i am tryign to run both the vpn and proxy simultaneously on u torrent, when i turn on the proxy (with the vpn connected) utorrent will not connect. looks like alot of people run both at once wihtout an issue, though i am not able to
  • Does the proxy work any better when used alone without PIA enabled globally at the same time? Which PIA region are you connected to?
  • ive tried several regions and all are producing the same result, and no it is not working independantly downloading through utorrent (wihtout the vpn on) it has to be something else. i am generating a seperate ip with just the proxy on as well. must be a setting or something inside the program. the one thing that is happening is it ststes under connection status no incomming connections and also under tracker status the dht status says waiting for announce...
  • actually when trying out just the proxy on my computers internet overall it will not connect at all. not sure why this is
  • Hmm, can you access the speed test page properly and are the speeds usable? http://proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com:8888/speedtest/

If you can load that page, then the settings in your torrent client are very likely wrong. Make sure you are using the X username and the generated password from your profile on the website and not the regular credentials, as they are not the same. If you send a few screenshots to the support they will be able to get it sorted out for you.
  • when i enable to socks5 proxy on my overall internet connection it will not connect to any website actually, which i am just realizing now, so it must be soemthing with my computer settings since i cant access the web at all when the proxy is enabled. any ideas?
  • it says on my mac when i enable proxy settings to bypass proxy settings from these hosts and domains (it comes stock like this):
    *.local, 169.254/16

also has a passive ftp mode checked and enabled as on.

could either of these be the issue?

never dealt with proxy before i have a new mac runnign on one of the most recent operating systems

  • Can you detail exactly where you are entering these proxy settings? I thought you were using the proxy settings in your torrent client, not for your entire connection. I don't know how well Mac's proxy settings works, but overall using the proxy on top of PIA is really redundant. If you already use the PIA app you don't need to set up the proxy. Some people opt to use the proxy in their torrent client specifically so they can disconnect or change regions as needed without risking a leak. But using the socks proxy globally on top of PIA is not a very good idea.
  • right now i am just tryign to use the proxy by itself without using the pia, and it is not working, either on its on on my overall internet or in the utorrent program. so basically the proxy is not working on my computer and i am assuming its how thigns are set up. under proxy settings the only optiosn are
"bypass proxy settings from these hosts and domains (it comes stock like this):
    *.local, 169.254/16

also has a passive ftp mode checked and enabled as on."

could either of these be the issue?
  • i would attach a picture here of the settings area where you enter the proxy info, if i could but it wont let me, so i wrote it out in the above message
  • No, those wouldn't be an issue. However, if you haven't entered your x-username and x-password, then there's no way it will work. I don't have a Mac so it's pretty hard for me to tell, but at this point you really should email support at [email protected] so they can get this sorted out for you.
  • i did enter my usernname and password just as it shows under my account on pia with no success. thanks anyway kinda stuck here

  • is the proxy workign for you on your computer?

  • right now that is?
  • Yes, everything is still up for me. Cases when the servers are down like yesterday are actually very rare.

  • do you know if proxy is specific to windows only?
  • No, proxies are not specific to Windows. SOCKS5 is a very simple protocol that a lot of apps supports, regardless of the OS. It is not however a VPN protocol. When applied system-wide, it actually just "suggests" applications to use it and sometimes is implemented in the OS libraries. But in no case it is a "Proxy everything through this". I've always found SOCKS support to be pretty spotty and more often than enough, fairly incomplete. I don't recommend it unless absolutely needed.

You are much better off just using the app, and maybe configure utorrent specifically to use one for the specific case I have explained before. But apart from that, the app is a lot easier and much better.
  • and your running the proxy on windows right?

  • yea i tried each individual proxy in the torrent app and none are working, something must be blockign them from workign on my end
