ASUS RT-AC66R open VPN

Please help a newbie!

I was recommended to purchase the router because it supported open VPN.  I was also recommended to use PIA by a friend. Now it seems that the two are not compatible.
I have trawled through this forum and read multiple guides but none seem to match my set up.
I am using the software supplied with the router version 3.0.0.4.380_4005.
I suppose I am really after a simple step by step guide.
Thanks for your help.

  • You are going to need to flash a DD-WRT or OpenWRT onto the router.  There's ton's of guides on this stuff.  If you search it up, you'll find it.  With Asus, I think you can also use Merlin builds, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

  • Thanks Khariz,

I was hoping to use the stock firm ware it came with. I had read about using merlin, but was hoping not to have to get that complex!

I have a Asus RT-AC66U and I have PIA VPN running on the stock firmware (Version:3.0.0.4.380_4005).

I had a hell of a time getting things to work. In the end the solution was infuriatingly simple. It all had to do with the order of setting up the VPN.

It is very important to enter the username and password AT THE VERY END!!!

Step 1. UPLOAD the .ovpn file
Step 2. UPLOAD the ca file
Step 3. Type in username, password and VPN description.
    Step 3. Press OK

    and Activate! :-)

For extra speed, replace the following in the .ovpn file.
    change
    comp-lzo
    to
    comp-lzo no push "comp-lzo no"

    Good luck
