New VPN User - Dumb down using uTorrent for me please :-)

Hi all, just signed up for PIA today and its my first time using VPN services.

Could anyone walk me through what I need to do to set up uTorrent to work with PIA, or point me to any simple instructions?

As of now, all I've done was install the PIA application on my machine and test that I could connect to it.  Also, if there's anything that I should do to set up PIA more generally, I'd really appreciate it.

Windows machine running uTorrent, Comcast internet

Sorry if this is a frequent topic - I browsed some posts and didnt see anything that I could easily understand.

Thank you!

Just get a client (they are free for windows)
Uninstall the one you have (you have made steps not required outdated?)
    Download a fresh program.

    Install, open options select preferences
    click Bandwidth
    upload rate (kB/s) [0:unlimited]
    Change to 6

    When finished a torrent download
Right click download with mouse select stop
    Then go to File Exit

Google for torrent sites to see files click Magnet (link)
Make sure your virus protection is on (Windows Defender is OK)
Many of these sites are fake or full of viruses/malware.

Check for Malware often! Suggest using Windows Norton Power Eraser it is a free tool and doesn't require installation. It just needs to be downloaded and run.

Use a good password  after check for malware.
Suggest adding the first letter in your name (upper CASE) first to numbers on post box followed by = then your alphanumeric 8 letter password
    example
    W66=SuperSecret86

  • So I tried to alter my settings based on info I found around the internet:

    Connections menu:
    - Listening Port:
    Checked:
    Enable NAT-PMP
    Randomize port each start
    Add Windows Firewall Exception
    - Proxy Server
    Type: Socks5
    Proxy: proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com
    Port: 1080
All options under Proxy Server and Proxy Privacy checked
    Username/Password entered

    BitTorrent Menu:
    - Basic BitTorrent Features
All checked except Limit local peer bandwidth and enable alturistic mode
    - Protocol Encryption - Outgoing: Forced

I also downloaded "CheckMyTorrent" and its reporting a 109 IP address with these proxy settings and VPN connected. Shows the same 109 IP with these proxy settings and VPN disconnected. The PIA website is showing a different IP address, so Im assuming all is well in uTorrent?

Any help would be appreciated - any tests I should do, any other configs I should check?  I also left the PIA application's settings default - anything I should check there?

Sorry for these probably dumb questions.
  • @Harry2: I just edited your comment. While we allow torrent discussions in general on the forums, we cannot allow linking to torrent trackers containing copyrighted material. Please refrain from doing so in the future, thanks :)

@p9198769: As long as the PIA app is connected (and optionally the killswitch feature enabled), your torrents are safe. PIA applies to everything on your computer, not just your browser! I highly discourage you of using the proxy: while it's a very popular option, it doesn't encrypt your traffic and you could get caught if your country is more restrictive than some others. Nesting the proxy inside a PIA tunnel is also completely redundant and won't give you any more protection. It can however slightly help you be protected when the VPN is not connected.
  • Max-P  no trouble thanks
  • Thank you Max-P!  I feel much better now having someone confirm that I was on the right track.
