HI, I am look to buy a VPN solution and was hoping to secure access at my router. I have read various articles but wanted to ensure that this will work before buying.

Any help would be appreciated 

With regard to speed - would this be capped at my uplink rate when accessing via a VPN, I currently on VM and have 12Mb Up and 200Mb down

The bottleneck with routers is the hardware chipset.  Most routers don't have floating point processors capable of handling high levels of encryption worth a darn. Most consumer-grade routers (even the best ones) will bottleneck you around the 30-50Mb down range.
